Young Entrepreneur Builds a True Global Company | Small ...

?

Success! In less than four years, Sean Hopwood started Day Translations, Inc. and hit $1.2 million in sales. He created six new jobs in the United States and 13 more abroad. With three domestic offices and five overseas, He serves clients from Argentina to Dubai.

?

With many hours of work, a huge dose of positivism and help from the SBDC, Sean built a true global company. But, getting to this point hasn?t been easy. This young entrepreneur has gone without a vacation since starting the business in 2007. He overcame the obstacles of starting a global business not only by relying on his technical and managerial skills, but also by surrounding himself with a group of positive employees.

?

?When you are starting a business, it is important to have someone support you, encourage you and believe in you, the SBDC did that for me,? said Sean. ?I truly feel they care about my success. With determination, a passion for what you do, and support from the SBDC, it is possible to be truly successful in starting your own business.?

Starting with the SBDC

After finishing his MBA, Sean wanted to learn more about the world of starting an import/export business.? He began attending the SBDC?s International Trade Certificate Program with a scholarship provided by the SBDC. SeanHopwood_MariaAs he received start-up consulting and conducted research, he found there was a great need for translations. Sean?s fluency in Spanish, French and Arabic landed him his first contract for $6,000. After translating he discovered he disliked the work and immediately hired his first employee. Sean continued attracting new clients and working with the SBDC to develop strategies to promote the business. SBDC?s Certified Business Analyst, Daniel Scott, spent more than 20 hours working with Sean in developing his Internet marketing and social media plan. He also received assistance from other SBDC consultants with taxes, payroll, Quickbooks, HR and financial management.

Sean?s global vision and love for language and culture transformed Day Translations, Inc. into a cosmopolitan company with a network of about 400 freelancers, who translate more than 100 languages. Sean has most recently added interpretation, voice over and talent casting to his offerings. He plans to continue growing the business while learning Hebrew. He says he will continue to utilize SBDC services for as long as he remains a small business.
