Amazon Kindle (2011) impressions

Price was one of the reoccurring themes at today's Amazon event in New York City, and nowhere was that factor more present than with the new Kindle. At $79, this truly is an entry level device, and certainly the company made some sacrifices to hit that price point -- most obviously, the reader doesn't have the touchscreen featured in both the Kindle Touch and the latest Nook and Kobo devices -- though like those products, the Kindle did lose its physical keyboard, giving it a much smaller footprint than the last generation. In place of the infrared touchscreen are a series of buttons: Home, Menu, Keyboard and Back. In the middle is a toggle button that lets the user scroll through menus -- that activity can be performed pretty quickly with the physical buttons, and flipping through pages is not problem with the familiar page buttons on either side of the screen. Where one really misses the presence of touch, however, is with the on-screen keyboard -- typing is performed by clicking one's way through the virtual keyboard, a familiar task for anyone who has ever entered their name at the beginning of a video game with a console controller. Of course, typing is a secondary task on a device like this, so for many users this may well not be a deal-breaker. For those who foresee the need for such functionality, however, $20 will buy you an upgrade to the Kindle Touch.

Holly Madison Drops $1 Million on Breast Insurance | tooFab.com

0929_holly_launch

Holly Madison may live in Las Vegas, but there's one thing she won't take a gamble on: Her breasts.

According to some bizarre news out today, Hugh Hefner's ex-girlfriend recently put down $1 million to insure her breasts with Lloyd's of London.

"They're my primary money makers right now," Holly tells PEOPLE. "I've heard about people getting body parts insured and I thought, why not?, because if anything happened to my boobs, I'd be out for a few months and I'd probably be out a million dollars."

It was once rumored that Jennifer Lopez took out a billion dollar policy on her body ... but she later denied it.

Check out a gallery of Holly's insured parts above.

?Toilettenpapier Drucker? Is What You Think It Is

toiletpaper_printerIf you told me two-and-a-half decades ago that this tow-headed youngster from Columbus, Ohio who spent his evenings looking up at the stars, engrossed in endless wonder at the boundless horizon of the invisible universe, would one day be able to print on toilet paper in his lifetime, he would have spit at you and then kicked your dog. He was a pretty crappy kid. But it has happened: we can now use off-the-shelf components to print on toilet paper. This is the end of history.

Palestinian Fatah Party committee member: Netanyahu, Obama ???scumbags??? (Daily Caller)

Members of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas? Fatah Party verbally assaulted President Obama last week, with one calling the president a ?scumbag? and another saying his U.N. speech was ?idiotic.?

Speaking on Al-Jazeera TV last week, Fatah Central Committee Member Abbas Zaki called President Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ?scumbags? while seeming to suggest his long-term goal was to create a Palestinian state instead of Israel, rather than in addition to Israel.

?President Abbas understands, we understand, and everybody knows? that the greater goal cannot be accomplished in one go,? Zaki said, as translated by the Middle East Media Research Institute. ?If Israel evacuates from Jerusalem, evacuates the 650,000 settlers and dismantles the wall, what will become of Israel? It will come to an end.?

?Who is nervous, upset and angry now? Netanyahu, [Israeli Foreign Affairs Minister Avigdor] Lieberman, Barack Obama,? he added. ?All those scumbags.?

Watch:

In a separate television interview, another Fatah Central Committee member, Jibril Rajoub, called Obama?s U.N. address ?idiotic.?

?First of all I think Obama?s speech was idiotic,? he said. ?It did not reflect U.S. policy or the doctrine they used in the past. It sounded like the speech of a student leader in a university rather than a speech of a leader of a superpower.?

Start a mompreneur/WAHM business - Wave Accounting

This post by guest blogger Maggie Geiser appears in our series of tools for WAHMs and mompreneurs.

Maggie Geiser and a customer

Maggie Geiser, left, and a mompreneur customer, Caragh Maskery (caraghmaskerycollection.com)

You have an idea, and it?s a great idea. Everyone ? your friends, even your mother-in-law ? thinks it?s a winner. So off you go and start your new venture.

As you tackle your To Do list, let me propose a short ?Don?t? list: things that you shouldn?t do, at least not yet. Avoiding the unnecessary at this stage will keep your business streamlined, and make your new venture easier and maybe even more profitable:

  1. DON?T register for anything you don?t need. In Canada, there is no need to register for GST/HST when you first start.
  2. DON?T incorporate until your business is making more money than you need to live on. If you are concerned about financial liability, talk to your insurance agent.
  3. DON?T sign up for a credit card merchant account with associated monthly charges. Use PayPal instead and pay as you go.

When it comes to your finances, here are some more things to avoid:

  1. DON?T mix your business income with your personal income.
  2. DON?T mix your business expenses with your personal expenses. If you have a bank account already, it?s simple to open another account and have this as your designated business account. Keep all your business income and expenses in that account. Transfer surplus funds to your personal account.
  3. DON?T forget to put aside money to pay your taxes. There are two sure things in life, death and taxes. (I can never remember who said that first!)

And lastly, some general rules that hold in business as in life:

  1. DON?T do something just because everyone else thinks you should. Ask WHY and then WHY again.
  2. DON?T be afraid to ask for help.
  3. DON?T give up.
  4. DON?T forget to say ?Thank You.?

Tuesday Poet: Colleen J. McElroy - theblackbottom

In a world where all the heroes

are pilots with voices like God

he brought her a strand of some woman?s

hair to wear on her wing.

She looked sideways at the ground

silent behind the cloudy film covering

her eyes knowing she would be his

forever. They cruised the city nights

each one spiralling away from the other

but always coming home to gather stories.

Dark streets bright tavern lights drunks

filled with beer in the gutters.

The flicker of stars shaped like a hunter?s

arrow bent stars that twinkled like babies?

eyes. No babies for them. She was an outcast.

He a loner. A perfect pair.

Winters had made him wise

and he avoided the single nests of summer.

He told her about things she could see.

How the dismal cover of clouds roils and explodes

and the ground aches like an old woman?s knee.

How wood rots against the tide

good for hunting grub.

How to fade and fall back into the wind.

He translated her pulse

into near-language. Their poetry so personal

even Peterson?s Field Guide could not tap it.

Only a stray hunter saw it.

Shook his head once thinking it a trick

of wind and wing then turned his eyes north

to search for the simple flight

of Brant or Canadian. Those patterns

he could easily understand.

That last night they drank from the river.

Sucked its delicate cusps of mold

sang anti social songs as if they were humans.

When he flicked his handsome head

to catch the drift of wind

she even managed a single tear.

She waited through days and nights

of grief. Circled the city less

then settled on the wires.

The metallic conductor captured her eyes.

She remembered how he proudly sang her name

as he pranced from pole-top to KV line.

One last fluff of feathers. One sigh

for all the unnested summers.

One single scratch

one electrical surge of power of love.

Then she fell smiling.

A trick he had taught her.

Gateway NV55S05u

The arduous part about spotting a bargain desktop replacement laptop is figuring out whether its parts are worth your while. The Gateway NV55S05u ($579.99 list), a budget 15-inch laptop, gets first crack at AMD's newest Fusion APUs (codenamed "Llano"). Though it can't outperform a similar offering from Intel, this laptop can tackle almost any task thrown at it, lasted almost five hours in our battery tests, and is priced to move. Budget-conscious shoppers: This laptop should be on your radar.

Design
Although the laptop's shiny plastic enclosure is a three-year old design, it's bright white hue and flowery decorations is pleasing enough to offset the inexpensive materials. But it's no match for the luxury of the aluminum covers found in the Lenovo IdeaPad V570-1066A9U ($629.99 list, 4 stars) and Asus U56E-BBL5 ($649.99 list, 4 stars). For a desktop replacement, the NV55S05u isn't overly bulky; its 5.6-pound frame is in the same ball park as the 5.5-pound Asus U56E-BBL5 and 5.6-pound HP Pavilion dv6-6013cl ($649.99 list, 4.5 stars). If you need a lighter 15-inch system, the 5.2-pound Samsung RV520-W01 can provide that.

The 15.6-inch screen doesn't really stand out, as its brightness levels and baseline 1,366 by 768 resolution are consistent with its peers. For the ultimate screen experience, you'll have to pay a significant premium for the Dell XPS 15z ($999 direct, 4 stars), whose resolution can scale to 1,920 by 1,080. The typing experience is usually a toss-up in this price range, but Gateway didn't disappoint here. The chiclet-style keys are raised to an ideal height so that it doesn't feel like your fingers are pounding on a hard surface. The Lenovo V570-1066A9U, however, is a better keyboard with curvier keys that takes into account the shape of your fingers. Gateway added a full size numeric keypad, unlike the half-size one found in the Lenovo V570-1066A9U. The mouse buttons aren't quite as soft as those of the Lenovo V570-1066A9U and Asus U56E-BBL5, but the NV55S05u's overall navigating experience lived up to expectations.

Features
The feature set is as standard as it gets in this price range. It has three USB 2.0 ports, and no eSATA or USB 3.0 technology, which have faster transfer speeds than USB 2.0. A USB 3.0 port can be found on the Asus U56E-BBL5. The NV55S05u lacks the latest wireless technologies, such as WiMAX and Wireless Display 2 (WiDi 2.0), which can be found in the Lenovo V570-1066A9U and U56E-BBL5 (although you do get Wi-Fi and Ethernet for network connectivity). Like every other desktop replacement, the NV55S05u has HDMI and VGA video outputs, a webcam, and a multimedia card reader. Although its 640GB, 5,400rpm hard drive matches that of the Samsung RV520-W01 and Asus U56E-BBL5, it's impressive that Gateway included this much in a cheaper laptop.

Performance
Gateway NV55S05Llano-based Fusion APUs are AMD's most powerful processors yet, buoyed by excellent graphics (with the on-die Radeon HD 6620G) and low-power consumption (think good battery life). This particular chip has four physical processor cores, compared with the Intel Core i5's two. It sounds impressive from a marketing perspective, but its performance scores are more in line with a dual-core Intel Core i3 processor. For instance, the NV55S05u trailed the Core i5-equipped Lenovo V570-1066A9U (2:00, 2.6) and Asus U56E-BBL5 (1:55, 2.6) in processor-intensive tasks like Handbrake (3 minutes 33 seconds) and Cinebench R11.5 (1.88). It took two minutes than the other two to finish Photoshop CS5 scripts (7:48), a multithreaded test that should have capitalized from the laptop's 6GB of memory and multicore processing. In real world speak, you won't notice these differences unless you're editing huge video files or rendering 50 photos at a time.

In terms of gaming, the A8-3500 in the NV5505u has considerable advantage over a Core i5-equipped laptop. It scored 6,038 in 3DMark 06, which is 30% better than the Lenovo V570-1066A9U (4,414) and Asus U56E-BBL5 (4,840) . The NV55S05u also tallied the highest frame rates in Crysis (36.7 fps) and Lost Planet 2 (38 fps)?two very demanding 3D games. With any integrated graphics chipset, though, you'll get better results by dialing down the settings to medium quality.

In the past, AMD-equipped laptops would always suffer miserably in battery tests compared with Intel-equipped laptops, but the story changes with the new AMD Llano APUs. The NV55S054u scored 4 hours 54 minutes in our battery test, outlasting the Lenovo V570-1066A9U (4:41) and coming within striking distance of the HP dv6-6013cl (5:17). With a bigger battery, the Asus U56E-BBL5 was the clear winner with a score of 7:34. Still, this kind of battery life is unprecedented for AMD components.

The Gateway NV5505Su is the type of desktop replacement that'll make you pause and wonder about the shortcomings that come with a low price and unfamiliar AMD parts. Well, let me reassure you that AMD's new Llano APU, the A8-3500, is every bit as capable as an Intel Core i5. Its graphics environment is superior over Intel's, and battery life, AMD's biggest concern, was more than satisfactory. It may not perform as well in hardcore tasks like video and photo editing, but its low price reflects these shortcomings. I would still recommend the Asus U56E-BBL5 because its slight premium is accompanied by a better looking design, more power, and better battery life.

Sydney Web Design ?Present Your Business Online!

Sydney Web Design ?Present Your Business Online!

Every year, the world?s population grows, businesses appear from nowhere, news is spreading with the speed of the light, and internet is becoming an ordinary thing that no one can live without.

Internet is becoming an essential medium for businesses to communicate with costumers and associates. Literally, every business needs an online presence these days, and having a website is the one of the key elements in every business commercial strategy.

Today the investment in producing a well designed website is a necessity in the business world. ?As an owner of a business consulting house, some years ago I could not imagine the advantages of having my own business website. But I do now.

I am writing this for all my clients and prospects (not only Sydney based, but Australia wide) as my concerns are justified. I will tell you about particular website building issues, since I?ve received plenty confusing questions for this topic.

For the absolute beginners, I would explain the very basic terms for this matter in a plain language, and in my next article I will provide a wide description for each of them, and many more.

- Website ? the online presentation (store) of your business outside your building, office, factory

- Website Design ? the face of your company online

- Web Development ? the brain, functionality of your website

The Web Design and Development Company you hire, should be considered a business partner just ?as all others business associates.? There are a lot of Sydney Web Design companies that offer a wide range of customized web design and development services, but how to choose the right one for your business is a hard thing.

]]>

Well, choose a company that provides not only web design and development services, but and all other services that are essential for creating, growing and maintaining your business online, and more important, company that have years of experience as it is priceless and with good portfolio background.

Let?s see where to start:

1. Creating your online company ? website. You decided to have a web site which presents your company online. Well, you need a name (domain), address (IP address) and space where you will operate online. Without them you don?t exist on internet. The root service that provides these things is called web hosting.

2.Website design and web development are fundamental too. Without them you don?t have a website. The professional web designer will know how to design your website completely in synchronization with your corporate image, and together with the web developer to create website that ??establishes your professionalism, and have only a positive effect towards your business. From the graphic design materials, logo design, to banner ads, your web designer acknowledges the importance of quality web design that will stay competitive and user friendly.

3. Now it?s time to grow your business. For this you need, an online marketing services, like ?SEO ? search engine optimization, e ? commerce, e ?mail, ?, that will enhance the corporate name and increase the brand awareness of your product and services to your target group of customers. I assume that this services are not familiar almost for everyone, thus I will explain them in my future posts. Don?t have doubts, this services certainly will have surprising effects on your business.

4. Website maintenance. Remember, support is crucial. When choosing a web design and development company in Sydney, always ask for support and maintenance. The website is alive, just like your company. It will suffer changes as your company and your business grows. Your will need professionals to take care of your website for you.

Present your business online as early as possible, find the very best?Sydney Web Design company to be your business partner online as I found mine, and your business will grow for sure.

Altitude and Boetsch?s power too much for Ring at UFC 135

Altitude and Boetsch?s power too much for Ring at UFC 135

Nick Ring tried to be elusive, but doing that for 15 minutes fighting in the Denver altitude is a major task. Tim Boetsch waited for Ring to slow down in the latter rounds and when he got his hands on him, he beat up him on the ground to win over the judges in a unanimous decision victory, 29-28, 29-28 and 30-27.

Ring, a former cast member on Season 11 of "The Ultimate Fighter," was unbeaten coming into the fight. Boetsch (14-4, 5-3 UFC) looks like a new fighter down at middleweight. He had moderate success at light heavyweight, but the weight cut has allowed him to really play up his inside power in striking and clinch situations.

Ring (12-1, 2-1 UFC) allowed Boetsch to get his hands on him way too much in the second and third rounds. The thickly-muscled former college wrestler dropped Ring to his knees with right hand. Ring rose quickly and tried to survive in the clinch. He threw some knees and he one of them. Boetsch slammed him down and eventually got into position to slap on a guillotine choke. Ring avoided a finish, but he was getting tired.

Boetsch's dirty boxing took a further toll and Ring hit the mat again at the end of the second. Boetsch nearly finished Ring with a nasty kimura, but ran of out time. It was more of the same in the third. Boetsch executed a beautiful throw in the final 90 seconds of the fight and roughing up Ring throughout the third. He sent Ring flipping into air and landed on top of him to knock the wind out of the Canadian.

It was all about the gameplan for Boetsch.

"I was trying to land one big punch in that first round and that doesn't work in the UFC," said Boetsch.

Between the first and second rounds, his corner urged him to get back to what they had talked about before the fight. Boetsch did so and it led to a solid win.

Satellite likely in ocean, but may have hit US

NASA's old research satellite is expected to come crashing down through the atmosphere Friday afternoon, Sept. 23, 2011 Eastern Time. The spacecraft will not be passing over North America then, the space agency said in a statement Wednesday evening. (AP Photo/NASA)

Charts the debris in space since the 1950s.

(AP) ? It's as big as a bus and weighs 6 tons, but officials probably will never be able to pinpoint exactly where a massive NASA satellite plummeted to Earth.

NASA space junk scientists believe that all ? or nearly all ? of the parts of their 20-year-old dead satellite safely plunged into the Pacific Ocean, likely missing land. But if their estimates are off, by only five minutes or so, fiery pieces could have fallen on parts of northwestern North America.

No injuries or damage have been reported on land, which NASA officials said was a good indication the satellite went into the ocean.

That doesn't necessarily mean it all fell into the sea. Some debris could have fallen over areas such as Portland, Oregon; Seattle; Calgary, Alberta; and Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, said Jonathan McDowell of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.

"Pieces are falling off of this flaming fire ball, and some of it has enough momentum to go hundreds of miles," he said.

Speculation was rampant on sites such as Twitter. There were no credible reports of debris on the ground, said Nick Johnson, NASA's chief scientist for orbital debris. But if the satellite fell even five minutes later than estimated, some of it could have hit land, he said.

"We don't know where the re-entry point exactly was. We don't exactly know where the debris field is," Johnson said.

NASA's earlier calculations had predicted that the former climate research satellite would fall over a 500-mile (800-kilometer) swath and could include land. Officials said the 35-foot (11-meter) satellite fell sometime between 11:23 p.m. EDT Friday (0323 GMT Saturday) and 1:09 a.m. EDT (0509 GMT) Saturday.

Much of the speculation focused on unconfirmed reports and even video of debris from the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite over Alberta, Canada.

NASA spokesman Steve Cole said that was possible because the last track for the satellite included Canada, starting north of Seattle and then in a large arc north then south. From there, the track continued through the Atlantic south toward Africa, but it was unlikely the satellite got that far if it started falling over the Pacific.

Some 26 pieces of the satellite representing 1,200 pounds (544 kilograms) of heavy metal had been expected to rain down somewhere. The biggest surviving chunk should be no more than 300 pounds (136 kilograms).

NASA urges anyone who thinks they've found satellite debris to call police. It's government property and illegal to keep it or try to sell it. The debris has no toxic contamination, but there could be sharp edges, NASA officials have said.

UARS is the biggest NASA spacecraft to crash back to Earth, uncontrolled, since the post-Apollo 75-ton Skylab space station and the more than 10-ton Pegasus 2 satellite, both in 1979.

Russia's 135-ton Mir space station slammed through the atmosphere in 2001, but it was a controlled dive into the Pacific.

Before UARS fell, no one had ever been hit by falling space junk and NASA expected that not to change.

NASA put the chances that somebody somewhere on Earth would get hurt at 1-in-3,200. But any one person's odds of being struck were estimated at 1-in-22 trillion, given there are 7 billion people on the planet.

The satellite ran out of fuel and died in 2005. UARS was built and launched before NASA and other nations started new programs that prevent this type of uncontrolled crashes of satellite.

Basics On Starting Your Own Online Business In South Africa ...

BASICS OF STARTING YOUR ONLINE BUSINESS

Launching an online business can seem either simple or simply harrowing, depending on your perception of the internet. Depending on your internet savvy, launching your online business will be either easy or you will need more help and guidance.

There are basically 10 steps you need to follow to initiate, cultivate and launch your internet business.

1. MOTIVATION AND GOAL SETTING

By reading this article we can assume that you have already thought about starting your online business and therefore the motivation exists. But, are you ready to invest the time and money needed to realize your vision?

You have to have the right mindset and a list of goals that you plan to accomplish, step-by-step.

First you have to gather the support of those who will be closely involved with you in your endeavour. In most cases the people most influenced by this decision of yours is your spouse and/or children when working solo from home.

Starting an online business is not for the faint hearted and a lot of work and dedication needs to be put in before you start to see results.

The problem we have in South Africa is that most Affiliate programs are designed for the overseas market and are difficult to employ in South Africa.

Therefore, I am not going to waste time on affiliate sites etc.

If you want to start an online business you must start something that will appeal to the South African market.

Therefore you need to do market research. Seeing as you are planning to start an online business, you need to do online market research.

The places where you can do this research is:

E-bay (Even though this is an American site, you will get valuable information about what people are looking for)

Google Trends (We either hate or love Google, but you need Google for any online business)

Amazon Movers and Shakers (A great way to establish popular products)

Keywords (These are the words that searchers use to find a product or service)

After you?ve done your market research you can start with your business plan. It doesn?t mean if you want to start an online business, you don?t need a business plan. This is usually where most people go wrong! Aspiring Online Entrepreneurs that an online business does not need the same attention to detail that a brick and mortar business needs. But the reality is that it might need more attention initially and will demand a lot of study and learning if this is a new avenue for you.

Your Online-Business Plan

The business plan is placed under the motivation part of this book, because it will keep you motivated when you feel down and want to pull your hair out and when you start wondering why you started this business in the first place.
Along with the plan you need goals to be set, but keep in mind not to bit of more than you can chew!

Setting your goals:

1. Make sure the goal you are working for is something you really want, not just something that sounds good.
2. A goal can not contradict any of your other goals.
3. Develop goals in the 6 areas of life:
Family and Home
Financial and Career
Spiritual and Ethical
Physical and Health
Social and Cultural
Mental and Educational
4. Write your goal in the positive instead of the negative.
5. Write your goal out in complete detail.
6. By all means, make sure your goal is high enough.
7. This is the most important, write down your goals.

On the internet, your growth rate can be much quicker than with a brick and mortar business because your audience is global and not restricted to your immediate area. Just make sure that you are equipped to service a global market. People using the internet are people who want instant gratification and are not usually willing to wait because you are unable to deliver.

2. IDEAS FOR INTERNET BUSINESSES

These are only ideas of what I?ve seen and have thought about starting. You can add any ideas. Internet is not discriminatory. You can sell/promote anything you wish.

2.1 Property ? Yes there are a lot of property websites. But maybe you can offer something different than what they are offering. Have a look here:
http://www.sherlock-homes.co.za
2.2 Cars ? You can start your own ?selling cars? business without ever buying a care. You can get people who want to sell cars, to place them on your website and you can either charge and advertisement fee or a percentage of the selling price.
2.3 Careers ? Start a career website. Get people to post CV?s on your site and even offer them video streaming as a preliminary interview. Income can be generated by getting people to advertise jobs on your site.
This site is for sale: http://www.careerexpress.co.za
2.4 Niche markets such as bridal, photography, sport, hobbies, crafts. Here is a site that is for sale http://www.bridescorner.co.za
2.5 You can start and run an online forum about certain interests. Your income here will be generated with banner advertising. (More about this later)
2.6 You can write content for business websites. There are a lot of businesses with websites out there that feel that the websites are a waste of time. And the only reason is that nobody visits the sites because there is never fresh content on the site. Fresh content is the most important ingredient for a successful website.
2.7 Auction site ? you can offer an auction site for people that have white elephants lying around their house.
2.8 Online shop ? this will be much the same as the auction site, with the difference that products will be sold at a set price. You can generate income by claiming a percentage of the selling price.
2.9 Sell second hand books. There is a vast market for second hand books out there! You can canvass for people who want to sell their second hand books and sell it for them here http://www.books-on-line.co.za
2.10 Online classifieds. The market is open for these types of sites. Gumtree is currently the biggest classifieds site in South Africa but it only caters for certain areas. You can have your own site by visiting here http://www.klerksdorphost.co.za
2.11 Selling ebooks. An ebook is a book that people can download and print or read on a pdf reader. These are very popular because they are usually concise and filled with a lot of interesting facts.

These are only a few ideas. I?m sure there are a lot of other ideas out there.

Let your imagination loose and think of something you might be interested in. Chances are that if you are interested, there are other people interested in the very same.

3. TIME MANAGEMENT

I cannot stress this too much!! When I started with the internet, I spent hours and hours on it, achieving absolutely nothing. I spent my time on forums, social sites etc and then one day I just decided that if I wanted to get somewhere, I should start somewhere.

]]>

Starting an online business is a big learning curve. And it is not so complicated as everyone would want you to believe.

You do not need to know HTML, Java, PhP or MySQL at all. You can make use of people who know these languages. I know you might think that it will be expensive, but it needn?t be like that! You can visit http://www.filing4africa.com and see what they have to offer.

Filing4africa.com is a South African Site made with South Africans in mind. Our packages are more than affordable and you can be sure of after sales service.

Hosting packages start from as little as R39.00 per month and the setup of a basic website as little as R1500.00

Why am I putting this at time management?

TIME IS MONEY!

You want to start an online business. You do not want to create the tools to start an online business. You can spend your time on doing further research and getting your content ready for your site.

Make use of the people out there who already have the expertise. Apply your expertise to your business.

You must make sure that by the time your website is launched, that you are familiar with how it works and that your backup plan is in place.

If you are planning to do this part time, make sure that your online business is fully automatic. You don?t want to lose clients because of their impatience. Ask your web developer to set up auto responders on your website. People want feed back, and they want it yesterday.

Make sure that you check your e-mails every day and answer each one of them promptly.

I have found that in South Africa, companies who do have websites, don?t bother to answer online queries. And that is defeating the purpose of a website. Your website is the welcome mat to your business!!

If you are planning to do your online business on a full time basis, you need to set out time for research, upgrading your site and keeping abreast of new things in your niche market. Do not stay behind, because if you do, no one will visit your online business. And all your efforts will be wasted.

Having an online business gives you the freedom to work in your pj?s and in your bed. No matter where you work from, it is important that you reply, research and keep your customers happy!

4. SITE STRUCTURE

Think back and try to remember a store where you do not like to shop. The reason most probably was ?the lack of structure?.

And so it will be with your site. Your site needs to have a logical structure. Your customers must find it easy to navigate your site.

The basics things your site needs are:

4.1 Homepage (landing page) ? this page is the welcome mat of your site. Important information and ticklers should be placed here.
4.2 Services/Products pages ? these are the pages where you tell your customers more about your service and/or products. It should be interactive, in other words, your customer must have the option to request more information.
4.3 About us page ? this is where you place the information about your business structure, your mission, your vision and accomplishments.
4.4 Contact us ? this is most probably the most important page of your site. Contact details should be clear and easy to find. Your customer must be able to contact you straight from that page.

It is better if you write the info of these pages yourself. You know your business way better than any one else. Your web developer can upload the info for you.

All graphics should be optimized for web use. Customers do not want to wait for a page to load. I have found that if I struggle to get a page to load, I do not return to that site.

Basic tips:

? Do not use too many colours and weird fonts. People do not take sites seriously when they are over decorated.
? Do not make use of large photo?s, graphics that slow down your site.
? You need to have your own domain name with e-mail addresses from that same domain. People don?t want to visit a site like www.yourdomainname.co.za and then receive emails from you@hotmail.com. It is not professional. You can grab a domain name here http://www.filing4africa.com. Please keep in mind that your domain name must be easy to remember and must not contain wild cards like *()%$ #@!
? Test your website in firefox, IE and google chrome to make sure your site is not distorted on the different browsers.

Try not to make use of ?free sites?. These sites are riddled with advertisements and are very irritating to your customer and more important, will distract their attention and lead them away from your site.

5. CONSTRUCTIVE CONTENT

Content is not just there to educate your customer. No, it must be used in such a way that your customer will be convinced to use your service or buy your product.

Put testimonials on your homepage. Many browsers like to see what a difference your service/product made in other peoples? lives.

When you work on your content, work with the 5 W?s

Who: Who will benefit from the product/service. Who are you?
What: What the product/service is all about, bonus material etc
When: When does the offer expire?
Where: Where can your customer reach you if they need more information.
Why: Why do they need your product more than any other similar product on offer.

Your content will play an important role in your search engine placement. Therefore you will have to learn to write for search engines. This is where keywords become important for Search Engine Optimization. If you are making use of a web developer, you don?t need to worry about this.

Content is not just confined to your website! Email marketing is a very important part of your online business.

The content to your customers should be professional with a balanced blend of relationship building, soft sell and hard sell copy.

Off course you cannot send out emails if you do not have any emails to send to. That is why you need to have a ?subscribe to our newsletter? opt in function on your site. No site should be without such a tool!

6. SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMISATION

The more know term for this is SEO. SEO is very important to you online business. In addition to previous tools mentioned, there are several other tools you can make use of.

Steps in SEO

6.1 Get the right keywords (You can help your web developer by brainstorming keywords for your online business here: http://adwords.googlecom/select/main?cmd=KeywordSandbox
6.2 Linking. Search for online businesses that would compliment your service/product and add their links to your website.
6.3 Fresh content on a weekly basis

So how will you do all this if you are not a web developer? You must make sure that your web developer gives you a step-by-step guide on how to add fresh content to your site.

Therefore it is better to make use of a content management system on your website than a normal HTML site. HTML sites have to be changes and reloaded every time you want to add something to your site.

With a content management system you will be able to post new news from the backend and it will be published in your frontend which is your actual website.

With a content management system, you can retain control over the content of your site. This is very important as you are in the end the one that has to market your online business.

7. ADVERTISING ISSUES

Without advertising your online business doesn?t stand a chance! And because it is an online business, it doesn?t mean you only have to do online marketing.

Successful marketing starts offline!!

The other day I met a wedding dress designer at a networking event. I asked him if he had a website for his business. He replied that he did, but never got any business from it.

By asking a few more questions I realized that he hasn?t marketed his website in any way. And he could not understand why he should!

Many people believe that the internet is some magic wand that creates customers for you! Do not be fooled! You cannot launch a website and then sit back and wait for customers to ?accidentally? discover your online business!

You HAVE to put out the word that your website exists!

And this is how you do it:

7.1 Advertise in local media and make sure your website domain name is shown prominently.
7.2 Put your domain name on ALL printed material.
7.3 Use your dedicated e-mail address (ie admin@yourdomainname.co.za)
7.4 Create a signature for your e-mail with your domain name and make sure the domain name is on each and every e-mail you send out! Your signature should include:
? Your full name
? Your domain name
? Your e-mail address
? Your phone number
? Your fax number
? Your tag line or Slogan
? Your company name
7.5 Place an advertisement in publications from your industry.
7.6 Your domain name must be listed on each article you write and if it appears on a website, it should be linkable.
7.7 Networking. Yes I know, we South Africans see networking as a four letter word ? but what I mean is ? everywhere you go, talk about your online business. Hand out your business cards with your domain name. Talk, talk, talk and yet again talk about your business!

Online marketing

Online marketing can be divided into two categories namely, free and paid.

If you have time and no money ? go the free way.

If you have money and no time you can visit this link and have it done for you:

http://filing4africa.com/virtualbiz/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=23&Itemid=46

The free way.

This method is very time consuming but definitely worth the trouble.

Here are some links where you can add your site for free!

http://www.klerksdorphost.co.za
http://www.sa-linx.co.za
http://www.business-directory.co.za
http://capetown.gumtree.co.za
http://www.vottle.com
http://www.netads24.com
http://www.theclassifieds.co.za
http://www.online-classifieds.co.za/classifieds/
8. CUSTOMER SERVICE

Off course it is easier to secure a client than actually keeping a customer. And usually we don?t keep a customer because our customer service is not up to scratch!

I had a surprising call yesterday. I stumbled upon a website in my search for a specific business I would like to start. And I filled in their contact form, not really expecting them to call me. Because I?ve done this numerous times on different sites and never even received a response until yesterday when I received a call from Barcelona. I nearly fell off my chair!

And this is exactly what you want. You want to shock your customers by giving them superieur service! Service they expect but don?t really believe they will receive!

You must be willing to listen to your customer. South African online business owners have this strange notion that they are invisible and therefore they never need to react. If you don?t react to customer complaints and enquiries, you will become invisible!

If your customer has a legitimate complaint you need to thank him first and foremost! Yes, I know it goes against our grain, but in the end, this customer has saved you a lot of embarrassment and future mistakes! And keep your customer updated on how you are fixing the problem.

Why is this important? One word ? internet!

The internet has given the normal off the mill customer the opportunity to lodge complaints on public sites and smear your company. Just visit Facebook or Hellopeter to see what people are really capable of doing!

No matter what the situation, you must always be courteous and friendly when dealing with your customers.

The biggest ever complaint is ?slow response?. Combat this by staying in touch!

9. KEEP ON MARKETING!

I know we all feel that one marketing campaign is enough. But is enough ever really enough?

You have to keep at it. Spend at lest an hour a day researching new and innovating ideas on how to market your online business. Keep on posting advertisements, and yes, on a daily basis.

There are so many places to place online advertisements that even if you do it on a daily basis, you can never deplete the supply of online advertising sites.

Thank you customer for using your service or buying your product by sending him/her a special thank you e-mail and follow that up within a week with a newsletter stipulating other product that they might be interested in.

This is where your auto responder comes in handy. It sends out an automatic reply to your customer, promptly and on time. What more could you ask for?

Send your customers interesting titbits about your service/product by alerting them about articles you?ve come upon. Customers always appreciate this and they will know that you are on the ball and up to date in your industry.

This is also a great way of getting fresh content on your website. The e-mails you send about your industry can be placed on your website thus keeping it fresh and up to date at all times.

Giants rough up Vick, pop Eagles

QB leaves with hand injury, watches as Eli throws 4 TDs in 29-16 win

By ROB MAADDI

updated 4:02 p.m. ET Sept. 25, 2011

PHILADELPHIA - Eli Manning delivered the knockout blow after Michael Vick got knocked out of another game.

Manning threw four touchdown passes, including two to Victor Cruz, and the New York Giants beat the Philadelphia Eagles 29-16 Sunday.

Vick started despite suffering a concussion in last week's 35-31 loss at Atlanta. He left with a broken right hand in the fourth quarter after helping the Eagles overcome a 14-0 first-quarter deficit to take a 16-14 lead.

It's uncertain how long Vick will be out. He'll have a CT scan Monday.

"I don't know anything right now except my hand is broken," Vick said.

Vick wasn't happy with the hit, either. He completed a 23-yard pass to Jeremy Maclin before taking a hard shot from Chris Canty.

"I felt I got hit late. No flag," Vick said. "At some point something catastrophic is gonna happen. Not to blame the refs, but more precautions should be taken. I'm on the ground all the time in the pocket."

Without their Pro Bowl quarterback, the Eagles (1-2) hardly look like the "Dream Team" that entered the season with Super Bowl or bust expectations.

Manning threw a pair of TD passes in the fourth quarter to rally New York. The Giants (2-1) have won two in a row and snapped a six-game losing streak against their division rivals.

"It's always good to beat those guys, especially here," Manning said. "They have good players and we new we had to come in with the same game plan as last year and just finish it this time."

In their previous meeting at the Meadowlands last December, the Eagles rallied from a 21-point deficit with 8:17 left, and won 38-31 on DeSean Jackson's 65-yard punt return for a touchdown on the last play.

The teams traded a lot of trash talk in the offseason and during the week. The Giants backed it up.

"I think I responded today," Giants safety Antrel Rolle said. "I'm not scared of anyone on the field. I thing it's more mental than physical. They tried to get in my head sticking their hands in my face, blocking me after the play, but if they want to fight, I'll fight anyone, but in between the lines, I'm too smart to get thrown out of the game."

Manning threw for 254 yards, and Ahmad Bradshaw ran for 86 and had 53 more receiving, including a TD. Filling in because Mario Manningham and Domenik Hixon are out, Cruz had three catches for 110 yards and his first two career scores.

Aaron Ross, who was benched in the second half of New York's win over St. Louis last Monday, had two interceptions that led to 14 points.

LeSean McCoy had 128 yards rushing and one TD for Philadelphia, which has blown two fourth-quarter leads in consecutive games.

After McCoy was stopped for a 3-yard loss by Michael Boley on fourth-and-1 from the Giants 43, Manning drove New York in for the go-ahead score. He tossed a 28-yard TD pass to a well-covered Cruz to put the Giants up 20-16. Jacobs ran in for the 2-point conversion to make it 22-16.

Cruz outfought Nnamdi Asomugha and Jarrad Page to make the catch near the goal line and fell into the end zone, losing the ball after he crossed.

"It means the world to me because a lot of people were saying our receivers were down and who would step up and I was happy to be that guy that stepped up to help my team," Cruz said.

Mike Kafka replaced Vick on the ensuing possession and Ross intercepted his first pass. Manning connected with Bradshaw for an 18-yard TD pass to put the game away.

Vick finished 16 of 23 for 176 yards and one interception. He ran for 31 yards. Vick looked shaky early, but made a few nice throws before leaving.
