Marriage as Leadership and Submission ? The League of Ordinary ...

It?s important to read and think about views other than your own, especially if the disagreements are profound:

Many of our young people want to be ?wives and husbands? rather than simply ?partners? and in their weddings they come as ?bride and groom? rather than simply two individuals. They believe that expressing these differences, including different responsibilities, makes for a better marriage?

The biblical teaching is that the promise made voluntarily by the bride to submit to her husband is matched by the even more onerous obligation which the husband must undertake to act towards his wife as Christ has loved the church. The Bible says that this obligation is ultimately measured by the self-sacrifice of Christ in dying on the cross.

This is not an invitation to bossiness, let alone abuse. A husband who uses the wife?s promise in this way stands condemned for betraying his own sworn obligations. The husband is to take responsibility for his wife and family in a Christ-like way. Her ?submission? is her voluntary acceptance of this pattern of living together, her glad recognition that this is what he intends to bring to the marriage and that it is for her good, his good and the good of children born to them. She is going to accept him as a man who has chosen the self-discipline and commitment of marriage for her sake and for their children. At a time when women rightly complain that they cannot get men to commit, here is a pattern which demands real commitment all the way.

Secular views of marriage are driven by a destructive individualism and libertarianism. This philosophy is inconsistent with the reality of long-term relationships such as marriage and family life.

Referring to ?partners? rather than husband or wife gives no special challenge to the man to demonstrate the masculine qualities which he brings to a marriage.

Men have to accept the limitations imposed by a commitment to marry. Both husband and wife must exercise self-control and the acceptance of boundaries, although in ways which are somewhat distinctive. My greatest interest in the draft service the diocese has prepared is the high standard being proposed for men.

Christian conservatives in the United States often say that marriage must be between a man and a woman, simply as a matter of definition. What they really mean is something much more like the above, I think. To reduce the argument to a sound bite?as they have done?begs the question.

The above is not question-begging, however. It posits that a proper marriage necessarily entails a promise of leadership and submission, with a man and a woman respectively taking those roles. It?s interesting in part because it also relegates the question of children to its proper place: Children are a good thing that might come from a marriage, but the marriage is here said to be complete once there is a promise of leadership and submission, from a man and a woman, regardless of whether children are present.

That?s an empirical claim, and even apart from the Bible, it?s based on centuries of tradition. It?s thus a lot harder to refute. We may find it repugnant as a prescriptive claim for our own society, and I do. But demonstrating why it?s wrong requires more than an elementary course in logic.

Charity toward Christian conservatives would demand that we ignore the sound bite version and engage with the above. Or would it not?

Radiation belt storm probes: Spacecraft pair to explore mysterious region where other satellites fear to tread

ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2012) ? Los Alamos National Laboratory expertise in radiation detection and shielding is poised to help a national team of scientists better understand a mysterious region that can create hazardous space weather near our home planet.

The Helium Oxygen Proton Electron (HOPE) analyzer is one of a suite of instruments that was successfully launched August 30 as part of the Radiation Belt Storm Probe mission -- an effort by NASA and the Johns Hopkins University's Applied Physics Laboratory to gain insight into the Sun's influence on Earth and near-Earth space by studying our planet's radiation belt.

The radiation belt -- also known as the Van Allen belt in honor of its discoverer, James Van Allen -- is a donut shaped soup of charged particles that surrounds Earth and occupies the inner region of our planet's Magnetosphere. The outer region of the belt is composed of extremely high-energy electrons, a shower of tiny, negatively charged bullets if you will, that can easily pierce the skin of spacecraft and knock out their electrical components. Because of these hazards, spacecraft routinely avoid the region.

"Today we are boldly going where no spacecraft ever wants to go," said plasma physicist Geoffrey Reeves of Los Alamos National Laboratory's Intelligence and Space Research Division. "We know we're going into the riskiest of environments, so we've taken the greatest steps ensure the satellites can complete their mission."

Combined with its inner region of energetic protons and electrons, the Radiation Belt is thought to be a product of cosmic rays and charged particles from the Sun carried toward Earth by the solar wind. The energy of particles within the belt constantly changes, and scientists have sought for decades to understand the mechanisms underlying these fluctuations.

Some space scientists originally thought the intensity of the radiation belts was fairly predictable. Conventional thought assumed that radiation energy levels within the belt increased when the belt was hammered by a large solar storm. However, recent observations have shown that radiation energy intensifies only about half the time after a storm interacts with the belt; in fact, about one-quarter of the time, energy within the belt actually decreases on the heels of a solar drubbing, Reeves said.

"We now know that big storms do not necessarily create large amounts of radiation," he said.

Understanding the radiation belt environment and its variability has extremely important practical applications in the areas of spacecraft operations, spacecraft and spacecraft system design, and mission planning and astronaut safety.

To better observe the complex processes in the radiation belts, the RBSP mission is sending a pair of probes to circle Earth. The probes will orbit at different speeds, allowing researchers to see subtle energy changes from dual vantage points on much shorter time scales than anything available from Earth's surface.

The Los-Alamos-designed HOPE instrument is part of a subset of instruments aboard the craft that will directly measure near-Earth space radiation particles to understand the physical processes that control the acceleration, global distribution, and variability of radiation belt electrons and ions. One of the things that makes HOPE unique is the instrument's ability to measure the more subtle, low-energy particles (electrons, hydrogen, and helium and oxygen ions) while under intense fire from the radiation belts' high-energy particles.

"It's like measuring the smallest, slowest raindrops in the eyewall of a hurricane," said Herb Funsten, principal investigator for HOPE instrument and chief engineer for Los Alamos' Intelligence and Space Research Division. "This is a tremendously difficult measurement. We detect atoms and electrons one at a time, and we sort the atoms by their weight. We have to make sure that the high-energy electron bullets that penetrate the instrument walls don't mess up our measurements."

The ability to successfully design and build an instrument to provide precise measurements under demanding high-energy conditions not only aids the RBSP mission, but can provide useful expertise for future intelligence applications as well.

A dozen instruments aboard the two probes will help unravel mysteries of the Van Allen Belt, but HOPE will be one of the last of the group to switch on. Because of HOPE's sensitivity to contamination, scientists will give the spacecraft time to complete its thruster firings, and for any remaining trapped gas in the spacecraft and instrument to dissipate before HOPE begins taking measurements.

"We'll wait for the probe to shed the rest of its spacecraft body odor before we turn on," Reeves said. "Then, all the instruments will work together to solve the radiation belt puzzle. Ultimately we want to make life better here on the ground by making sure all satellite keep working the way they are supposed to."

The RBSP mission is slated to continue for two years. Los Alamos scientists are hoping to begin having preliminary data to share with other space scientists by the end of the year if the mission experiences no complications.

Samsung 55-inch OLED TV to be called ES9500; sports new, slimmer design; is upgradeable with Smart Evolution Kit

There?s a major revolution happening in the TV world. Okay, there are several: Quad HD, 4K, 8K, various implementations of glasses-free 3D, new and exciting forms of content delivery, and more. But the one we?re most excited about is OLED (organic light emitting diode).

OLED is as close as it gets to the perfect screen tech. It sports nearly infinite contrast, perfect viewing angles, incredibly punchy colours, lightning fast response times (gamers rejoice), uses only a tiny amount of power while doing all this, and allows massive televisions to be thinner and lighter than a 24in desktop monitor.

Though Sony and Panasonic will be getting in on the OLED game next year, currently the big players are LG and Samsung.

We?ve already looked at LG?s stylish model in our {LG 55-inch OLED TV hands-on review}, and found it to be an absolute corker. However, when we checked it out, we found that Samsung?s 55-inch OLED effort ?didn?t feel quite as ?finished? as LG?s?.

Those who felt the same way will be glad to hear that Samsung?s OLED flagship has now received a redesign to go along with its model number, and a few extra features have also been confirmed. The first Samsung OLED TV will be named the ES9500, which gels well with the Korean manufacturer?s existing model number line-up as the 9000-series is its premium range.

The redesign is most notable on the stand, which is now slimmer and more streamlined. To be honest, it looks a bit more like rival LG?s effort, but as we loved the look of that telly this is pretty much a good thing. After all - as with tablets - there are only going to be a limited number of designs that are practical, minimalist and attractive all at the same time.

Another major plus is that the ES9500 OLED TV has been confirmed to use Samsung?s modular Smart TV platform. This means you can swap out the chip and core system powering the ES9500?s multimedia, browsing, social networking and interactive gesture/voice experience for a newer, better, faster version down the road. Essentially, it?s as if you could swap the guts of your smartphone while retaining its screen and chassis.

The first ?Smart Evolution Kit? will apparently be arriving next year, confirming that the 55-inch Samsung ES9500 OLED TV is still on track for a 2012 launch. As to price, OLED doesn?t come cheap, and it has already been confirmed that this Samsung television will set you back over ?5,400?

Scientists analyze dinosaurs' last meals

Dinosaur fossils found with the bones of birds and small dinosaurs in their stomachs reveal the beasts may have been adept hunters capable of downing prey more than a third their own size, researchers say.

Fossils are occasionally found with the remains of animals and plants inside what were once their guts. These tummy contents can shed light on what they once ate ? for instance, past research showed a mammal predator apparently had a tiny dinosaur as its last meal.

Scientists investigated two specimens of a carnivorous dinosaur from Liaoning, China, known as Sinocalliopteryx gigas. The predator was roughly the size of a wolf, about 6 feet (2 meters) long, and had feathers or hairlike fuzz covering its body to help keep it warm.

Back when this dinosaur was alive, about 120 million years ago, the area was a warm, wet forest, with a diverse fauna of dinosaurs, birds and crocodilians. "It was kind of a quintessential dinosaur environment, with lots of volcanic activity that periodically inundated the landscape and buried things within it with exquisite preservation," said researcher Phil Bell, a vertebrate paleontologist at the Pipestone Creek Dinosaur Initiative in Canada. "Today the area is pretty much farmland, although the farmers all understand the importance of fossils and the interest they create, and a lot have turned to farming for dinosaurs."

One of the Sinocalliopteryx specimens, a complete and remarkably well-preserved skeleton, apparently dined on a birdlike, cat-size feathered dinosaur known as Sinornithosaurus, judging by the partial leg found in its gut. [See Images of the Dinosaur Guts]

The other Sinocalliopteryx specimen, an incomplete skeleton, held the remains of at least two primitive crow-size birds known as Confuciusornis, as well as acid-etched bones from a dinosaur. (Confuciusornis was probably limited to slow takeoffs and short flights.)

"Stomach remains are evidence of actual interactions between animals, which is extremely rare in the fossil record," Bell told LiveScience. "We're lucky to find one or two bones of anything; to get a specimen with the remains of its last meal or meals is pretty cool."

It remains uncertain whether the dinosaurs actively hunted or scavenged these meals. Still, the fact that Sinocalliopteryx gobbled at least two birds of the same species at about the same time "says chances are very good it was actively selecting its prey; that makes it a predator," Bell said.

And capturing flying prey points to a stealthy, capable hunter, the researchers added.

"What I think is coolest about these findings is that it starts to bring these animals to life," Bell said. "A lot of people look at fossils as just dead things ? it's hard for them to imagine them as living, breathing animals. When you get something like this, it really brings them to life."

The scientists detailed their findings online Wednesday in the journal PLoS ONE.

Domestic coal use linked to substantial lifetime risk of lung cancer in Xuanwei, China

ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2012) ? The use of "smoky coal" for household cooking and heating is associated with a substantial increase in the lifetime risk of developing lung cancer, finds a study from China published on the British Medical Journal website.

This represents one of the strongest effects of environmental pollution reported for cancer risk in any population, say the authors. It also underlines the importance of taking action to minimise exposure to the most hazardous types of fuel.

About half the world's population uses coal and other solid fuels for cooking and heating, often in simple stoves that are unvented.

Exposure to certain types of solid fuel smoke is associated with several diseases, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, acute respiratory infections, and lung cancer. However, the relationship between smoky coal use and lung cancer is not fully understood.

So an international team of researchers compared deaths from lung cancer between lifelong users of "smoky coal" and "smokeless coal" for household cooking and heating in Xuanwei County, Yunnan Provine, China, where lung cancer rates are particularly elevated.

In total, over 37,000 individuals were followed over a 20-year period (1976-96) during which time more than 2,000 deaths from lung cancer were recorded.

After taking account of other possible risk factors including tobacco use, lung cancer cases and deaths were substantially higher among users of smoky (i.e. bituminous) coal for home cooking and heating than users of smokeless (i.e. anthracitic) coal.

In absolute terms, the risk of lung cancer death before 70 years of age for men and women using smoky coal was 18% and 20% respectively, compared with less than 0.5% among smokeless coal users of both sexes. These risks are almost as high as those reported for heavy smokers in Western countries, ranging between 20% and 26%.

Lung cancer deaths were also associated with the average number of hours that a smoky coal user spent at home and the age at which participants started cooking.

The authors say that their findings have important implications for public health in this region of China and suggest that the use of less carcinogenic types of coal or other fuels can translate into a substantial reduction of lung cancer risk.

As this chemical and physical composition of coal differs widely in different geographical locations, additional research is needed on the carcinogenicity of various types of coal, they add.

Google offering Google for businesses, free until the end of 2013

Google is bringing the enterprise-friendly elements of its Apps platform into Google+ in order to help businesses collaborate on projects online. The company's been using the service internally, but feels it's time to launch, in Google tradition, a "full preview" with a free and open beta that'll run until the end of 2013. The feature set includes private sharing, admin tools and, most impressively, hangouts directly integrated into Calendar, Gmail and Docs -- letting you video chat with multiple colleagues while you draft that project proposal, or resignation letter. Apps chief Clay Bavor hasn't mentioned how much the service will cost when the preview period finishes, but we'd be surprised if it was much more than what it currently charges if it's trying to snare the Yammer and Salesforce crowds.

Android Device Chip Race: MIPS Takes On ARM

10 Tablets To Shake Up 2012

10 Tablets To Shake Up 2012

(click image for larger view and for slideshow) MIPS Technologies has no intention of leaving the Android device market to semiconductor heavyweight ARM, the company made clear this week. MIPS outlined ambitions to wrestle smartphone and tablet business away from ARM, and perhaps enable its licensees to challenge Apple's mobile products and Apple's internally-designed processors. Sunnyvale-based MIPS, which had announced its proAptiv processor design in May, shared more details during an August 28 presentation at the Hot Chips conference in Silicon Valley. Given mobile industry design timeframes, it may be 2014 before we know if the company's campaign is successful.

MIPS grew out of a project initiated by current Stanford president John Hennessey when he was a professor at the university in 1981. The company has evolved into a chipmaker specializing in consumer electronic components, such as those found in TVs, Blu-ray players, and--most crucially for its fledgling rivalry with ARM--Android devices aimed primarily at emerging markets. With its newest chips, MIPS hopes to leap from role player to star status.

The proAptiv design is an implementation of the MIPS32 architecture. Citing CoreMark CPU-centric benchmarks, MIPS claims its new product easily outclasses ARM Cortex-A9 cores and is in the same league as the Cortex-A15, ARM's newest architecture.

Neither ARM nor MIPS manufactures its own chips. Instead, both companies license their designs to other companies. Throndson claimed proAptiv fees will be lower than those charged by ARM, noting that the processor's smaller die size will allow more efficient power consumption while reducing silicon costs.

MIPS has already claimed symbolic victories over ARM, such beating its competitor in bringing 64-bit cores to market. Nonetheless, ARM controls much of the non-x86 marketplace thanks to a robust network of partners in the mobile market--something that MIPS currently lacks.

If the new design meets expectations, proAptiv offers a relatively clear path for MIPS to partner with system-on-a-chip designers such as NVIDIA and Qualcomm. Following the May announcement, there was even speculation that Microsoft could benefit from purchasing MIPS, as the acquisition would not only come at low cost (relative to, say, buying ARM) but also provide Apple-like control over internal components.

In media reports, Noel Hurley, ARM's VP of marketing and strategy, has dismissed the chatter as overhyped, and downplayed claims that proAptiv's reportedly smaller size engenders design advantages. ARM touts its chip's Trustzone technology (which facilitates secure payments and digital rights management), plus its virtualization and media processing capabilities.

This war of words is currently transitioning into marketplace skirmishes--but as previously noted, the outcome could be years away. New chip designs take around 18 months to appear in new products, so it will likely be late 2013 or early 2014 before on-paper comparisons become tangible advantages or missteps. In the meantime, industry watchers will keep an eye on the partners MIPS' proAptiv accrues, and whether any of them come at ARM's expense.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? Isaac crawled into the nation's midsection early Friday, leaving a soggy mess in Louisiana. Neighborhoods were underwater, and many homes that stayed dry didn't have lights, air conditioning or clean water.

It will be a few days before the soupy brown water recedes and people who live in flooded neighborhoods can return home. The city, spared any major damage, lifted its curfew and returned to its usual liveliness, although it was dampened by heavy humidity.

"I have a battery-operated fan. This is the only thing keeping me going," said Rhyn Pate, a food services worker who sat under the eaves of a porch with other renters, making the best of the circumstances. "And a fly swatter to keep the bugs off me ? and the most important thing, insect repellent."

The heat was getting to Marguerite Boudreaux, 85, in Gretna, a suburb of New Orleans.

"I have a daughter who is an invalid and then my husband is 90 years old, so he's slowing down a lot," she said, red in the face as she stood in the doorway of her house, damp and musky from the lack of air conditioning.

Isaac dumped as much as 16 inches of rain in some areas, and about 500 people had to be rescued by boat or high-water vehicles. At least two deaths were reported.

On Grand Isle, a barrier island on the Gulf, the town pumped away water. Sections of the only road to town had washed out.

On a street turned river in Reserve, on the east bank of the Mississippi River, two young men ferried their neighbors to the highway in a johnboat, using boards as paddles.

Lucien Chopin, 29, was last to leave his house, waiting until his wife and three kids, ages 7, 5 and 1 were safely away.

He was finally joining them late Thursday, hoping they would find a shelter.

His van was underwater and water flowed waist-high in the house he'd rented for eight months.

"It's like, everything is down the drain. I lost everything. I've gotta start all over."

Chopin was upset that pumps meant to keep the area dry either failed or were shut off.

"We knew it was coming, but they didn't tell us we had to evacuate. We had no idea it was gonna be like this," he said, a refrain echoed by many.

Cisco Gonzales, a heating and air conditioning business owner, said he got his boat and truck and headed for higher ground when he heard the water was rising quickly, from 0 to 6 feet of water in five minutes.

"I've never seen so much water in my life," said Gonzales, who built a home in Braithwaite, southeast of the city, after his previous home was damaged by Katrina in 2005.

He rode out the storm at a ferry landing and when the weather calmed, he went out and rescued about a dozen people.

"I got back to my house to assess the situation, and it's a mess," he said. "That's all I can say."

Isaac hit on the seventh anniversary of Katrina, a hurricane that devastated New Orleans.

The two storms had little in common. Katrina came ashore as a Category 3 storm, while Isaac was a Category 1 at its peak. Katrina barreled into the state and quickly moved through. Isaac lingered across the landscape at less than 10 mph and wobbled constantly. Because of its sluggishness, Isaac dumped copious amounts of rain. Many people said more water inundated their homes during this storm than during Katrina.

Both storms, however, caused the Mississippi River to flow backward. And both prompted criticism of government officials.

In the case of Isaac, officials' calls for evacuations so long after the storm made landfall caused some consternation.

Jefferson Parish Council President Chris Roberts said forecasters at the National Hurricane Center in Miami needed a new way of measuring the danger that goes beyond wind speed.

"The risk that a public official has is, people say, 'Aw, it's a Category 1 storm, and you guys are out there calling for mandatory evacuations,'" Roberts said.

Eric Blake, a specialist at the hurricane center, said that although Isaac's cone shifted west as it zigzagged toward the Gulf Coast, forecasters accurately predicted its path, intensity and rainfall. He did say the storm came ashore somewhat slower than anticipated.

Blake cautioned against using Katrina as a benchmark for flooding during other storms.

"Every hurricane is different," Blake said. "If you're trying to use the last hurricane to gauge your storm surge risk, it's very dangerous."

Crews intentionally breached a levee that was strained by Isaac's floodwaters in southeast Louisiana's Plaquemines Parish, which is outside the federal levee system. At the same time, water at a dam farther north in Mississippi was released in an effort to prevent flooding there. Aerial images showed the water gushing out of both.

In Louisiana alone, the storm cut power to 901,000 homes and businesses, or about 47 percent of the state. That was down to 39 percent, or about 821,000, by Thursday evening, the Public Service Commission said.

Entergy Corp., Louisiana's largest power company, said Isaac knocked out power to nearly 770,000 of its customers in Louisiana, Mississippi and Arkansas. Only three storms have left more customers without power: Hurricanes Katrina (1.1 million), Gustav (964,000) and Rita (800,000), the company said in a news release.

More than 15,000 utility workers began restoring power to customers in Louisiana and Mississippi, but officials said it would be at least two days before power was fully restored.

In Mississippi, several coastal communities struggled with all the extra water, including Pascagoula, where a large portion of the city flooded and water blocked downtown intersections.

High water also prevented more than 800 people from returning to their homes in Bay St. Louis, a small town that lost most of its business district to Katrina's storm surge.

Robbie Daniel, 55, an industrial engineer, and his wife, Kathi, a retired school teacher, live in a house on the Tchoutacabouffa River in Biloxi, and hadn't left home since Tuesday. Their house is on stilts and was surrounded by chest deep water.

Kathi saw online Thursday that casinos could be opening so they hopped in a kayak, paddled to their car on higher ground and drove to Island View Casino Resort in Gulfport.

"Tired of sitting there watching rain," Kathi said.

Katie Couric Laments Ann Curry Firing

Katie Couric may have left The Today Show in 2006, but she still has some strong opinions regarding the current state of the program. Specifically, its handling of Ann Curry.

And they aren't very positive.

Katie Couric and Ann Curry

"I felt really bad for Ann. I still don't understand why they didn't give her sort of a proper send-off," Couric told Philly.com this week as part of her promotion for Katie, which premieres on September 10, adding:

"Ann did some extraordinary work during her time there. It was just not the best chapter in The Today Show. It made me sad for the institution."

That's for sure.

Ratings for the program haven't picked up and there's reportedly even chatter that many employees want Matt Lauer gone next. The juggernaut has fallen has very hard times.

Couric, though, kicks off her talk show next month and has booked Jessica Simpson and Sheryl Crow as her opening day guests. She says she's inspired by Oprah, but...

"When people say, 'Are you the new Oprah?' I say, 'No, I'm the old Katie.'"

Low-cal longevity questioned

Limiting food intake in monkeys fails to extend survival

Web edition : Wednesday, August 29th, 2012

Decades of research have linked low-calorie diets with extended survival, but a new report finds that rhesus monkeys on strict diets don?t live longer than their counterparts getting a standard diet.

The findings, reported August 29 in Nature, run counter to a 2009 study from the University of Wisconsin?Madison that showed a clear survival advantage in a calorie-restricted group of similar rhesus monkeys. Scientists suspect that differences in the two studies? designs might explain the discordant findings, leaving the question of longevity still dangling.

Both research groups will need to wait another decade or more before all the monkeys live out their lives. But the authors of the new study, conducted at a National Institute on Aging laboratory in Baltimore, say their data are unlikely to change, since calculations show that the chance of a survival difference arising in the remaining monkeys is exceedingly low.

?I don?t think one study overturns 75 years of research,? says Steven Austad, a bio-gerontologist at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, who isn?t part of either study team. But he notes that most previous calorie-restriction studies have been done in short-lived animals. ?It?s always been possible that whatever you used to increase their lives might not work the same in long-lived animals.?

The median life span for a rhesus monkey in captivity is about 27 years, but some can reach age 40, says study coauthor Julie Mattison, a physiologist at the aging institute. The NIA study includes 121 monkeys, divided between calorie-restricted and standard-diet groups. Some monkeys were put on one diet or the other when they were already well into middle age. Others started on the regimen earlier in life, some very young.

Now, 23 years into the study, more than half of the monkeys have died and no survival advantage shows up from calorie restriction, the scientists report. The team considered only aging-related deaths attributable to causes such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer.

The calorie-restricted monkeys in the NIA study get about 25 to 30 percent fewer calories per day than normal, Mattison says. But she acknowledges that the control diet might also slightly underfeed the monkeys ? by perhaps 5 to 10 percent fewer calories. ?It may very well be that slight calorie restriction in the control animals, plus a nutritionally balanced diet,? limits the survival difference between the groups, Mattison says.

The Wisconsin study control monkeys get more food than the NIA controls ? a standard diet plus 20 extra grams of chow per day to eat as they wish. The NIA monkeys, on calorie restriction or not, get a variety of foods, whereas the Wisconsin monkeys all get standardized pellets. While both approaches provide essential nutrients and the same percentages of carbohydrates in the diet, the NIA monkeys get less sugar than the Wisconsin animals do.

?We don?t know what that difference really means yet,? says Ricki Colman, a biological anthropologist at the University of Wisconsin. ?Those are the kinds of things we will be looking at when we go through our data.? Austad observes that the NIA control monkeys weighed less and had less diabetes than the Wisconsin controls.

Looking beyond longevity, the value of calorie restriction ? in any species ? might lie in overall health, not just racking up years, Colman says.

Mattison agrees, noting that while the new study didn?t show a survival advantage from fewer calories, it did offer hints of a better life. None of the monkeys that were started on calorie restriction early on has developed cancer, she notes, compared with six monkeys in the standard-diet group.

But calorie restriction very early in life may come with risk. Some monkeys started very early on calorie restriction developed diabetes, even though they are far from obese, she says, and some show signs that their immune systems might not be as good as those in the control animals.

?Science thrives when people get a result they don?t expect,? Austad says. ?This study is going to provoke a lot of useful discussion.?

Trading2day: Would you buy something that is getting scarce?

COCOA is something that will be featured many times in future posts. For now I just want to make an small introduction to my first post regarding this commodity.?

My long term view is extremely bullish for COCOA as long as prices stay above 2000$ per Metric Ton (MT). I target 3000$ for short to medium term. For the time being 2400$ is the first important support.

You could get an idea of what is going on in the cocoa market by checking the following links.

The trading stance that one should follow is definitely bullish. Any price pullback should be considered as a buy opportunity. However patience is needed as this move is still at its starting point and I prefer adding to my position as prices rise and break resistances or near suport levels. Always manage your risks and do not put all eggs in one basket.

Thank you for reading this post. If you want help with trading or have a question don't hesitate to contact me.

Legionnaires Hear of Troops? Selflessness, Nature of Enemy

By Amaani Lyle
American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Aug. 29, 2012 ? The senior military assistant to Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta lauded service members and provided his impressions of the enemy they face in remarks yesterday at the American Legion?s national convention in Indianapolis.

Marine Corps Lt. Gen. John F. Kelly credited the fearless dedication of Americans who have served in overcoming struggles ranging from British oppression, communism, and Nazi rule to the ?high tide? of Islamic intolerance and extremism.

?Service members have come to understand the simple fact that America?s strength was and should be again a people stitched together by a shared sense of history, values, customs, hopes and dreams that unite us, ? [and] that there is great power in us as individuals, but even greater power in individuals who voluntarily work together and support each other,? Kelly said.

Despite the belief of some that the United States has produced a generation of materialistic, self-absorbed young people, Kelly said, Americans can ?watch in wonderment those who serve or have served, asking not what their country can do for them, but always, and with their lives, what they can do for America.?

The general also emphasized the formidability of modern-day threats, acknowledging more than 6,000 military members killed in action since overseas contingency operations began after the 9/11 terrorist attacks against America.

?We didn?t start this fight,? he said. ?It came to us motivated by a visceral loathing of everything we are. Our enemy is savage, offers absolutely no quarter, [and] has a single focus: that is [to] kill every one of us here at home or enslave us with extremism that serves no God and no purpose that any decent man or woman could ever understand.?

Kelly said military members? families are the small portion of American society that each day awaits the dreaded visit from officials who would tell them their loved one in uniform will not come home. He also said he can attest to the selflessness of service members who have endured and continue to endure the hardships of war.

?I?ve seen them literally turn the intangibles of commitment, bravery and selfless devotion into real and meaningful action,? Kelly said. ?In my three tours in this war, I never saw one hesitate or do anything other than lean into the fire and, with no apparent fear of death or injury, take the fight to those who would do you harm.?

Kelly recounted battlefield fear that is at times all-consuming, with uniformed people expressing levels of courage even their families may not realize they have.

?When no one would call them ?coward? for cowering behind a wall or shivering in panic in a bunker, slave to the most basic of all instincts -- survival -- none of them do,? Kelly said. ?When the calls for the corpsman or medic are shouted from the mouths of young kids who know they will soon be with their God, when seconds seem like hours and it all becomes slow motion and fast-forward at the same time ? and the only sensible act is to stop, get down, save yourself, they never did.?

Kelly said he prays that the nation the fallen have loved and protected is forever worthy of their sacrifice.

?We are America, and we must prevail, because we remain mankind?s best hope for the future,? he said.

President Barack Obama has nominated Kelly to receive his fourth star and serve as commander of U.S. Southern Command.

Tatooine-like planet: Astronomers spot pair of planets orbiting twin suns (+video)

Tatooine-like planet:?In a cosmic first, astronomers have discovered two alien planets orbiting two stars, not unlike Luke Skywalker's home planet in the Star Wars films.

Astronomers have for the first time discovered two alien planets whirling around a pair of stars: a complete solar system with twin suns just like Luke Skywalker's fictional home world Tatooine.

The system was detected by NASA's Kepler space telescope, which measures minisucule changes in the brightness of more than 150,000 stars to search for planets that pass in front of or 'transit' their host star. The movie begins by showing a birds-eye view of the system as it zooms in on the host stars.

Most stars like our sun are not singletons, but rather come in pairs that orbit each other. Scientists had found planets in these binary systems, so-called circumbinary?planets with two suns like Tatooine?in the "Star Wars" universe.

To find more circumbinary planets, astronomers analyzed data from NASA's prolific?Kepler space telescope, which has detected more than 2,300 potential alien worlds since its March 2009 launch. Kepler had to date detected four systems with circumbinary planets ? Kepler-16, 34, 35 and 38.

The scientists have now announced the detection of Kepler-47, the first system seen with multiple worlds encircling a pair of stars. The star and its planets, called Kepler-47b and Kepler-47c, dwell about 5,000 light-years away, in the constellation Cygnus, the Swan. [Planets of the Tatooine-like Solar System (Gallery)]

"Kepler-47 shows us that binary stars can have close-in planetary systems, just like the ones we see in single stars," study lead author Jerome Orosz at San Diego State University told SPACE.com. "Most of the stars in the galaxy are in binary or higher-order multiple systems, so the fact that planetary systems can exist in these types of systems is important. If we were restricted to looking for planets around single stars, we would be missing most of the stars in the galaxy."

Spotting "Tatooine" solar system

The planets are much too far away to see with the naked eye. Rather, they were discovered by the drop in brightness they cause when they cross in front of, or transit, their host stars.

This dimming is tiny, only 0.08 percent for planet Kepler-47b and 0.2 percent for planet Kepler-47c. By comparison, Venus blocked about 0.1 percent of the sun's surface during its recent transit. Data from Kepler enabled researchers to deduce the relative sizes of the objects and orbits. They also relied on follow-up observations performed by telescopes at the McDonald Observatory in West Texas.

South Africa hosts 'peace talks' in mine strike standoff

South African officials sought to broker a "peace accord" Wednesday as they led talks to calm the bad blood from a violent strike at a Lonmin platinum mine where 44 people have been killed.

About 50 negotiators for management, unions and non-union workers filled the town hall in Rustenburg, near the Marikana mine in South Africa's North West province, for closed-door meetings mediated by labour ministry officials.

Both Lonmin, the world's third-largest platinum producer, and the workers' representatives kept a tight lid on the discussions, but an immediate resumption of operations at the mine -- which has essentially been paralysed since the strike began on August 10 -- looked unlikely.

The company wants a "peace accord" to be sealed before talks start on workers' wage demands. But workers, who say they earn 4,000 rand a month and want 12,500 rand (1,190 euros, $1,490), insist they won't go back underground until their demands are met.

"We will not move from the (demand) for 12,500 rand," said Zolani Bodlani during a short break from the talks, before hanging up the phone.

Lonmin spokeswoman Sue Vey said the strikers first have to stop intimidating their colleagues who try to go back to work.

"At the end of the day it's all about public order. We cannot discuss wages when people are intimidated. It's all a matter of 'it has to go back to normality before anything can be discussed'," Vey told AFP.

"Today is the day of peace accord and a first step and an instrument to move together. Everyone wants it to be a success," she said.

Lonmin says workers in fact earn around 10,000 rand when bonuses and other compensation are included.

Fewer than eight percent of the mine's 28,000 employees showed up for work on Wednesday, a further slide in attendance as the strike, which was launched by 3,000 rock drill operators, hit its 20th day.

Police opened fire on striking workers at the mine on August 16, killing 34, after an escalating stand-off between rival unions that had already killed 10 people including two police officers.

The incident was the worst day of police violence in South Africa since the end of white-minority apartheid rule in 1994.

London-listed Lonmin relies on the Marikana mine for about 92 percent of its annual production.

Unions and Lonmin bosses, led by executive vice president Mark Munroe, often broke away from the meeting room Wednesday to consult with members of their delegations, refusing to give out details on the proceedings.

"The meeting is tense, but everyone recognises the need to find a solution to this problem. It may take some time to arrive at a solution," an official from the ministry told AFP.

The talks include both the powerful National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and the upstart Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU), whose bitter rivalry has been blamed for the unrest at the mine.

An official from South Africa's labour dispute resolution agency said the talks would last until Friday.

Outside the town hall, Lonmin employee Benzi Tau told AFP: "We trust that our leaders will convince the employer to come to a sensible decision. So far they haven't showed any sympathy to our need."

Mediator Bishop Jo Seoka from the South African Council of Churches struck an upbeat tone before entering the venue.

"I'm very optimistic because this is the first time that all the parties are meeting. We are positive," he said.

The court case of over 250 miners arrested after the strikes also continued briefly in a Pretoria court Wednesday. The case was put on hold until Thursday after the prosecution asked for a postponement pending further investigation.

The men face charges ranging from public violence to murder, while 78 other people injured in the shooting are set to be arrested once they are discharged from hospital.

Landlords Tactics You have to know About When Rental Office Space

A good renter rep broker can give clients an excellent guesstimate with respect to the useable square footage of the area he?s shown a tenant.

Most tenants think that leasing office space for rent nyc is similar to renting an apartment.
Plainly it isn?t and creating a small mistake as a result of lack of experience and knowledge cost a company a fortune on the term of a hire. These two examples are a couple among a lot of potential mistakes a new tenant can make without appropriate guidance.
Contrary to popular belief there are multiple forms of electricity charges in commercial real estate leases.
Sounds ridiculous but it?s accurate. The most widely used types are called rent introduction, submetered, and direct.
Submetered electric is basically the landlords way of metering a renters electric and asking for them a proportion profit on top of your actual usage. Market prices on this surcharge are from 8% to as high as 15%.
A great way to understand these pitfalls and also the many others not pointed out here is toconsult a tenant rendering commercial real estate broker. These are generally brokers whose lone job is to stand for tenants in deals and instruct these on avoiding frequent costly errors any time negotiating commercial real estate dealings.

MyCyberLawyer's Blawg: Professionals Against Cyber-Slander ...

Please take the time to follow the link below and join my Group on LinkedIn.?

Professionals Against Cyber-Slander & Cyber-Bullying

This Group?was formed to connect and bolster those of us who want to enjoy the freedoms of speech afforded by the U.S. Constitution, but who also recognize that often uncontrolable damage is created by Online Defamation, Online Bullying and Online Harrassment at the hands of known or unknown users.

Our collective effort can be used to inform one another of certain tactics and strategies to combat this area of the law that is grossly underdeveloped and which is still too young to address much of the slander and libel that is published online.

Come here and tell your story, help others to deal with the online defamation or bullying of which they are a victim. Hopefully, we can help one another in tracking, stopping and pursuing these online polluters for the damage they create.

Announcement from Professionals Against Cyber-Slander & Cyber-Bullying

Please take the time to refer this Group to as many Professionals and Businesses, as you have time.

I believe that we are seeing a new tort develop in popularity. It's not that the tort of defamation is new, but that the tort of defamation via the Internet is aggressively growing, just as car accident tort claims grew with the invention of the motorized vehicle. Prior to the motorized vehicle, car accident lawsuits were limited to a few horse and buggy claims (do the research).

Just like the turn into the 20th Century increased the motorized vehicle accident claims for the tort of negligence, the turn into the 21st Century has brought about a way for EVERY person to easily express themselves, positively and negatively, thereby increasing instances for the tort of defamation to occur. Most of us remember when the only way to defame someone was to have it printed in the newspaper or to print leaflets and pass them around. In school, maybe some graffitti on the bathroom wall was viewed. That is all gone. The Internet and smartphones provide an unprescedented vehicle for the destruction of lives (literally in some cases death), businesses & careers, via the defamatory comments on the Internet.

What most people don't know: defamation is usually covered under a homeowner's insurance policy, just as car accidents are covered under car insurance policies. Thus, I predict, the rate at which these claims will grow in the courts will be drastic as the courts realize the validity of the actual damage to its victim and as the victims make claims against the antagonists' insurance policies.

This Group is interested in growth, your input, your ideas, education, your community outreach, and helping to stop or curb the proliferation of defamation and bullying on the Internet.

Please share this Group, it impacts everyone from Professionals to children. As Professionals, we have a unique position to influence our communities, enforcement and laws. Grab a shovel and help dig us out of this problem; be part of the solution.

The Social Media Wormhole and where it's leading - Mari Cochran ...

August 28th, 2012 // 5:52 pm @ admin

In?physics, a?wormhole?is a hypothetical?topological?feature of?spacetime?that would be, fundamentally, a ?shortcut? through?spacetime. ?Wikipedia

?

We had no social media life back in 2004 when Facebook launched. Back then there were only a handful of social media sites (Friendster, MySpace, etc.). ?Google?s Orkut launched in 2004 but as we see from history has pretty much gone away, just like MySpace.

In the last 5 years social media has really gained traction; appearing to be the lost Internet wormhole into online marketing for many small businesses. Wow. It didn?t cost a lot and yet with a little effort your brand could be seen. Social media was almost an equalizer to the big marketing budgets of large corporations. ?That was then. This is now.

The wormhole has gotten smaller as the space has gotten crowded. ?As of today, there are over 6,000 social networking sites (All Things Digital, August 27, 2012, ?Big Years for Instagram and Pinterest Bust Up the Social Networking Charts?. ?Popularity position is switching so fast you?ll get whiplash trying to keep up. ?According to the All Things Digital article, Google Plus was no. 56 a year ago. Today it?s no. 4. ?A year ago Pinterest was no. 188 and today?s it?s no. 3. ?Things change quickly.

Given the crowded space and proliferation of social networks where will all of this lead? ?Given the biggest IPO flop in history, where does that leave Facebook? Given the complete confusion about Google Plus (do we, don?t we, what is it?) how do you measure or define a social network as popular or successful? ?Have you arrived to the party late and gotten stuck with the bill? ?Let?s hope not.

From a small town girl living in small town America, I see social media taking two main roads ? one is the path to ownership and the other is the path to growth of niche sites.

The Path to Ownership ? if you?re large enough (and how do you define that) the path to ownership means creating your own social media network, some kind of hybrid conglomeration of other social media networks. ?Lady Gaga recently achieved this with the launch of LittleMonsters.com ? a combination of Pinterest, online discussion form, events and news. ?You have to join to get access. (Click here for Article).

Growth of Niche Sites ? There is a rise in niche social sites. ?These sites appeal to a very narrowly defined group of people. ? This is taking the same path as online dating sites. ?The 3rd largest growing dating site (after Match.com and Eharmony) is OurTime.com, an online dating site only for men and women over 50. ?Remember, sometimes you get more attention in a smaller room. ?Not every small business needs to get the attention of 900 million people ? 100,000 will do just nicely.

So, whether you create your own or join a niche, this social media wormhole is leading us to a whole new world. ?Check back with you in a year!

Japanese spacecraft to search for clues of Earth's first life

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? In a Physics World special report on Japan, Dennis Normile reports on how the Japanese space agency JAXA plans to land a spacecraft onto an asteroid in 2018 to search for clues of how life began on Earth.

Hayabusa 2 will be JAXA's second attempt at collecting material from an asteroid, after its first mission returned to Earth in June 2010. Hayabusa 2 will be launched in 2014 with a view to settling on the targeted asteroid, named 1999 JU3, in mid-2018 before arriving back on Earth in 2020.

As soon as Hayabusa 2 safely reaches its destination it will fire fingertip-sized bullets into the surface of the asteroid at speeds of 300 m s and collect the rebounded fragments. After moving to a safe distance away, it will then detonate an impactor module, which will fire a 2 kg projectile into the asteroid to create a 2 m crater.

Hayabusa 2 will then return to the crater to collect samples that, as Normile writes, will not have been exposed to space weather and solar radiation before and will therefore have been created in the very early days of the solar system.

It is thought that the asteroid's distance from the Sun will mean a better environment for preserving water and amino acids, which may add weight to the theory that asteroids and comets helped bring life to Earth.

JAXA's first mission, Hayabusa, overcame engine failures, fuel loss and communication blackouts to finally return to Earth after successfully landing on the asteroid Itokawa. Tens of thousands of people in Japan watched the spacecraft re-enter Earth's atmosphere via Internet streaming and more than 100,000 people queued at several venues around the country to catch a glimpse of the capsule when it went on display.

A malfunction during the original mission meant that bullets could not be fired to collect samples; however, specks of dust from the asteroid were caught in the collection canister, meaning some material was returned for analysis.

Shogo Tachibana, a cosmological chemist at Hokkaido University who is principal investigator for sampling for Hayabusa 2, hopes the material from the second mission will be free of contamination and therefore give a clearer insight into the early days of the solar system, unlike samples of meteorites that have crashed to Earth in the past.
