Samsung 55-inch OLED TV to be called ES9500; sports new, slimmer design; is upgradeable with Smart Evolution Kit

There?s a major revolution happening in the TV world. Okay, there are several: Quad HD, 4K, 8K, various implementations of glasses-free 3D, new and exciting forms of content delivery, and more. But the one we?re most excited about is OLED (organic light emitting diode).

OLED is as close as it gets to the perfect screen tech. It sports nearly infinite contrast, perfect viewing angles, incredibly punchy colours, lightning fast response times (gamers rejoice), uses only a tiny amount of power while doing all this, and allows massive televisions to be thinner and lighter than a 24in desktop monitor.

Though Sony and Panasonic will be getting in on the OLED game next year, currently the big players are LG and Samsung.

We?ve already looked at LG?s stylish model in our {LG 55-inch OLED TV hands-on review}, and found it to be an absolute corker. However, when we checked it out, we found that Samsung?s 55-inch OLED effort ?didn?t feel quite as ?finished? as LG?s?.

Those who felt the same way will be glad to hear that Samsung?s OLED flagship has now received a redesign to go along with its model number, and a few extra features have also been confirmed. The first Samsung OLED TV will be named the ES9500, which gels well with the Korean manufacturer?s existing model number line-up as the 9000-series is its premium range.

The redesign is most notable on the stand, which is now slimmer and more streamlined. To be honest, it looks a bit more like rival LG?s effort, but as we loved the look of that telly this is pretty much a good thing. After all - as with tablets - there are only going to be a limited number of designs that are practical, minimalist and attractive all at the same time.

Another major plus is that the ES9500 OLED TV has been confirmed to use Samsung?s modular Smart TV platform. This means you can swap out the chip and core system powering the ES9500?s multimedia, browsing, social networking and interactive gesture/voice experience for a newer, better, faster version down the road. Essentially, it?s as if you could swap the guts of your smartphone while retaining its screen and chassis.

The first ?Smart Evolution Kit? will apparently be arriving next year, confirming that the 55-inch Samsung ES9500 OLED TV is still on track for a 2012 launch. As to price, OLED doesn?t come cheap, and it has already been confirmed that this Samsung television will set you back over ?5,400?
