OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) ? Organizers of a televised benefit concert say they raised more than $6 million in pledges and ticket sales to help people in Oklahoma trying to recover after a deadly tornado last week.

A spokeswoman for the United Way of Central Oklahoma reported the updated figures Thursday after the "Healing in the Heartland: Relief Benefit Concert" hosted by Blake Shelton and televised live on NBC.

Several country music stars with Oklahoma ties performed during the Wednesday night concert in downtown Oklahoma City. The included Shelton, Miranda Lambert, Vince Gill, Reba McEntire and Rascal Flatts. Other performers included Usher, Darius Rucker and Luke Bryan.

The money goes directly to the United Way of Central Oklahoma. It will distribute funding to agencies helping those affected by the May 20 tornado.

May 30, 2013 ? On May 20, 2013, the Magnetospheric Multiscale, or MMS, mission team at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., reached an unprecedented milestone. The team mated the instrument and spacecraft decks to form the fourth and final MMS observatory. This is the first time Goddard has simultaneously engineered this many observatories, or spacecraft, for a single mission.

"The logistics of building four of the same thing is a new challenge, one that really makes us push the boundaries of how we operate," said Brent Robertson the MMS deputy project manager at Goddard. "These are first generation, new science observatories, and we've built them all at the same time. It's been like a very intense game of musical chairs."

The large Goddard MMS clean room can hold all four spacecraft at once, and a detailed schedule keeps track of how the team is moving from task to task. The MMS team has cause for pride in their work: building four observatories for a single mission, when many don't have the chance to build four in an entire career.

Due to launch in late 2014, MMS will investigate how the sun and Earth's magnetic fields connect and disconnect, explosively transferring energy from one to the other -- a fundamental physical process that occurs throughout the universe, known as magnetic reconnection. Using four spacecraft will provide MMS with the multipoint measurements needed to determine whether reconnection events occur in an isolated locale, everywhere within a larger region at once, or by traveling across space.

PORT LOUIS, Mauritius (AP) -With world football leaders under pressure to make concrete progress in reform, FIFA President Sepp Blatter took time to praise one of the four women vying to become the body's first permanent female executive committee member.

In his first public speech in Mauritius on Wednesday at the Asian Football Confederation's regional congress, Blatter called Australian candidate Moya Dodd "a good candidate and a good-looking candidate," adding he preferred the term "lady" to female when referring to the new position.

"I can tell you she's good. She's very good. So good luck," Blatter said of Dodd, a former Australia international who is now a lawyer and an AFC vice president.

Dodd will compete against candidates from Burundi, Turks and Caicos Islands and New Zealand at the FIFA Congress for a newly-created four-year term for a woman on the governing body's executive committee, with the winner becoming the first permanent female member.

Dodd said she was not offended by Blatter's view of her.

"I was more focused on his earlier comments that I was a good candidate, a very good candidate," Dodd said. "Knowing him as I do, I certainly took no offense."

The meeting was presided over by newly elected AFC President Sheik Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa, who Blatter also complimented while taking a swipe at the former leader and Blatter's one-time rival for the FIFA leadership, Mohamed bin Hammam.

It was good for the AFC "to get back the full trust and confidence in the leadership," Blatter said.

Paving the way for the direction of the main FIFA Congress, which runs Thursday and Friday, Blatter confirmed in his brief speech before leaving to applause that he would ask FIFA's 209 member countries to defer a decision on introducing age and term limits for senior officials, sending it instead to the 2014 congress for possible debate.

Looking at introducing a maximum age for FIFA positions - including the presidency - and limiting their number of terms were only a small part of FIFA's overall reform process, Blatter said, going against criticism that it's a sign that FIFA is ignoring key reform areas.

"I will ask the congress to postpone this problem and give it time to prepare the proposal," he said. "National associations will have to write if they want or don't want limitations. It is not an important point. It's a small point in this congress and this reform."

FIFA's executive committee had already announced on Tuesday that the age and mandate limits would not be voted on at the congress.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - An Iranian-born used car salesman from Texas was sentenced to 25 years in a U.S. prison on Thursday after pleading guilty to participating in a plot with an Iranian military unit to murder the Saudi Arabian ambassador to the United States.

Manssor Arbabsiar, 58, received the sentence at a hearing before U.S. District Judge John Keenan in Manhattan. He had pleaded guilty in October last year to charges related to his seeking to hire Mexican drug traffickers to kill the ambassador. The plot was vehemently denied by Tehran.

He pleaded guilty to one count of murder-for hire, one count of conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire, and one count of conspiracy to commit an act of terrorism transcending national boundaries.

The supposed member of the international drug trafficking cartel who Arbabsiar offered to pay $1.5 million to carry out the plot was in reality a confidential informant of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

No weapons were obtained and the scheme to kill Saudi Ambassador Adel al-Jubeir was not fulfilled.

"I can't change what I did," Arbabsiar said in a brief statement in court.

U.S. authorities also brought charges against Gholam Shakuri, who prosecutors say was a member of the Quds Force, the covert unit of Iran's Revolutionary Guards. Shakuri has not been arrested.

U.S. prosecutors sought the statutory maximum sentence of 25 years for Arbabsiar, saying in a court filing on May 2 that the "seriousness of this offense and importance of deterrence in this context cannot be overstated."

Lawyers for Arbabsiar had sought a lower sentence of 10 years, contending he had provided assistance to U.S. authorities after his arrest and citing purported mental health issues.

But Keenan emphasized the need to send a message to those who might consider violent acts against U.S. interests "must learn the lesson that such conduct will not be tolerated."

"In a case like this, deterrence is of supreme import," Keenan said.

In addition to his prison sentence, Arbabsiar was ordered to forfeit $125,000.

In a statement, the Saudi embassy in Washington said the sentencing was "another step along the road to justice and sends a message of determination against those who seek to disrupt order in the international community through flagrant violations of international laws, human values and ethics."

'ENEMY AMONG US'

Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara in a statement called Arbabsiar "an enemy among us" and a "key conduit for, and facilitator of, a nefarious international plot" to kill the ambassador and as many innocent bystanders as needed to finish the job.

According to prosecutors, the plot had its origins in a spring 2011 trip by Arbabsiar to Iran to visit his family.

A cousin who was a high-ranking member of the Quds Force told Arbabsiar he wanted him to find someone he could hire to kidnap al-Jubeir, prosecutors said in the May 2 filing. The cousin subsequently put Arbabsiar in touch with Shakuri, his deputy, who would be in charge of the mission, the filing said.

After returning to Texas, Arbabsiar in May 2011 went to Mexico and met with the DEA source, who Arbabsiar met through someone he knew in Texas.

As part of the deal with the DEA source, Arbabsiar wired $100,000 as a down-payment for the $1.5 million offered to carry out the plot, which by then had evolved to murdering the ambassador, prosecutors said.

Arbabsiar had several further meetings with the DEA source, who recorded conversations. In a July 2011 one, Arbabsiar said it would be okay to carry out the assassination even if up to 100 bystanders were hurt in the process, prosecutors said.

Prosecutors said for his role in the plot, the Quds Force gave him $25,000 in operational expenses. Arbabsiar said after his arrest that he had demanded an additional payment of at least $1 million, prosecutors said.

In September 2011, Arbabsiar met with Shakuri in Tehran to discuss the plot. Arbabsiar flew to Mexico then from Iran via Germany, but was re-routed back to Germany through John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, where he was arrested, prosecutors said.

Following his arrest, Arbabsiar agreed to place a call to Shakuri, which became part of the basis for charging him in the plot, the May 2 filing said.

May 28, 2013 ? Young people are increasingly turning to prescription drugs to get high. Research out of the University of Cincinnati sheds new light on what could increase or lower that risk.

The research by Keith King, a University of Cincinnati professor of health promotion; Rebecca Vidourek, a UC assistant professor of health promotion; and Ashley Merianos, a graduate assistant in health promotion, is published in the current issue of the Journal of Primary Prevention.

The study focused on more than 54,000 7th- through 12th -- grade students in schools across Greater Cincinnati, including the Tristate regions of Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana. The data was collected by the Coalition for a Drug Free Greater Cincinnati as part of the 2009-2010 Pride Survey on adolescent drug use in America.

A total of 13.7 percent of the students reported using prescription drugs -- without a doctor's prescription -- in their lifetime. Males were more likely to abuse prescription drugs, as well as high school students, versus junior high school students. Among ethnicities studied, Hispanic students indicated they were more likely to use nonmedical prescription drugs compared with white and African-American students.

The study also found that pro-social behaviors, including strong connections with parents (and their advising on the dangers of drug use), reduced the students' odds of abusing prescription drugs, along with positive connections to teachers and their schools. Connections with peers who disapproved of substance abuse also decreased student chances of abusing prescription medications. "Students at every grade level who reported high levels of parent and peer disapproval of use were at decreased odds for lifetime nonmedical prescription drug use," according to the study.

On the other hand, the authors found that relationships with drug-using peers increase the risk of youth substance abuse. Peer use of alcohol, tobacco and marijuana were associated with increased use of nonmedical prescription drugs for all students.

"While much research has examined factors associated with overall substance use among youth, relatively few studies have specifically investigated risk factors, protective factors and sex/grade differences for youth involvement in nonmedical prescription use," write the authors. "Identifying specific risk and protective factors for males, females, junior high and high school students would help to clarify prevention needs and enhance prevention programming."

The study cites national research that indicates kids are turning to prescription drugs to get high under the mistaken notion that they're safer than illicit drugs, yet national research has shown that even short-term use of non-prescribed, prescription medications can cause cardiovascular and respiratory distress, seizures and death.

The authors suggest future research should explore young people's use of specific nonmedical prescription drugs.

Demographics of the Study

The study was close to evenly divided between male (49.4 percent) and female participants; 75 percent reported they were Caucasian; 14.4 percent African-American; 1.8 percent Hispanic/Latino; 2.4 percent Asian/Pacific Islander; 0.4 percent Native American; 4.1 percent multiracial and 1.5 percent selected "other" for ethnicity. Respondents were close to evenly distributed across 7th- through 12th-grades. Approximately two-thirds (62.4 percent) of participants reported living with both parents; 16.2 percent reported living with their mother only; 2.9 percent reported living with their father only.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) ? Cellphone pioneer Motorola announced Wednesday that it's opening a Texas manufacturing facility that will create 2,000 jobs and produce its new flagship device, Moto X, the first smartphone ever assembled in the U.S.

The company has already begun hiring for the Fort Worth plant. The site was most recently unoccupied but was once used by fellow phone manufacturer Nokia, meaning it was designed to produce mobile devices, said Will Moss, a spokesman for Motorola Mobility, which is owned by Google.

"It was a great facility in an ideal location," said Moss, who said it will be an easy trip for Motorola engineering teams based in Chicago and Silicon Valley, and is also close to the company's service and repair operations in Mexico.

The formal announcement came at AllThingsD's D11 Conference in Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., from Motorola CEO Dennis Woodside.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry's office administers a pair of special state incentive funds meant to help attract job-creating businesses to the state, but Moss said the Republican governor did not distribute any money to close this deal.

"Motorola Mobility's decision to manufacture its new smartphone and create thousands of new jobs in Texas is great news for our growing state," Perry said through a spokeswoman. "Our strong, healthy economy, built on a foundation of low taxes, smart regulation, fair legal system and a skilled workforce is attracting companies from across the country and around the world that want to be a part of the rising Texas success story."

The factory will be owned and run by Flextronics International Ltd., a Singapore-based contract electronics manufacturer that has had a long relationship with Motorola.

Assembly accounts for relatively little of the cost of a smartphone. The cost largely lies in the chips, battery and display, most of which come from Asian factories. For instance, research firm iSuppli estimates that the components of Samsung's latest flagship phone, the Galaxy S4, cost $229, while the assembly costs $8.

In December, Apple Inc. said it would move manufacturing of one of its existing lines of Mac computers to the U.S. this year, reversing decades of increasing outsourcing. The company has come under some criticism for working conditions at the Chinese factories where its products are assembled.

Some other manufacturers, such as Hewlett-Packard Co., have kept some PC assembly operations in the U.S.

Moss said the Moto X will go on sale this summer. He said he could provide few details, citing priority secrets. He said the idea from the beginning was to bring manufacturing back to the U.S.

"It's obviously our major market so, for us, having manufacturing here gets us much closer to our key customers and partners as well as our end users," he said. "It makes for much leaner, more efficient operations."

But Motorola will still have global manufacturing operations, including at factories in China and Brazil.

"Fact remains that more than 130 million people in the U.S. are using smartphones," Mark Randall, Motorola's senior vice president of supply chain and Operations, said in a statement, "but until Moto X, none of those smartphones have been built in the USA."

Since mentioning the "R" word (Remission), I have noticed a very stiff decline in the number of followers of the blog, dropping off by more than 50 views a day. ?I just hope that is not a result of people thinking that our journey with cancer is over and that all is well now, which is not the case at all. ?We are happy to hear that the radiation was effective, and to hear the word "remission" did offer a glimpse into what could be a healthy future for Melissa, but she is still in treatment. ?I think it is a good idea, also, for people to realize that brain cancer is not something that is cured, it is something you have to try to live with. ?What that means is that, unlike most forms of cancer, it almost always comes back. ?Often, when brain cancer comes back, it returns more aggressive and faster growing as well, which leads to the grave diagnosis for most grade 3 and 4 patients. ?Now, I have met many people who are 10 years past where Melissa is and are still cancer free...but that is not the usual results. ?Even for those who have practically beat it, it maintains a presence in and over their lives, involving routine scans and related medicines indefinitely. ?I think for Melissa, getting past the side effects of the medicine and the lack of motivation (both due to a crazy situation and the part of the brain damaged by her tumor) will be the hardest part. ?Getting back to some level of activity has been challenging. ?We still face a very rough, hard road ahead even if the cancer never returns....a road that will require the support of our friends and family for years to come.

May 28, 2013 ? Using a novel method of analyzing genetic variations in families, researchers at Johns Hopkins have found that individually harmless genetic variations affecting related biochemical processes may team up to increase the risk of schizophrenia. They say their findings, reported May 28 in Translational Psychiatry, bring some clarity to the murky relationship between genetics and schizophrenia, and may lead to a genetic test that can predict which medications will be effective for individual patients.

"It's long been clear that schizophrenia runs in families, but schizophrenia as a simple inherited disease didn't make sense from an evolutionary point of view because people with the disease tend to have fewer children and the disease-causing genetic variants shouldn't survive," says Dimitri Avramopoulos, M.D., Ph.D., an associate professor of psychiatry in the McKusick-Nathans Institute of Genetic Medicine. Moreover, he says, studies searching for schizophrenia-linked gene variants have found only weak connections to a few genes -- nothing that would explain the persistent prevalence of the disease, which affects about 1 percent of the population.

Most geneticists believe that the culprit in so-called complex genetic diseases such as schizophrenia is not just one genetic variant, but more than one acting in concert. It's also likely that individual cases of the disease are caused by different combinations of variants, Avramopoulos says. He and fellow researchers took this hypothesis a step further, theorizing that while our bodies can usually compensate for one faulty gene that affects a particular system, more than one hit to the same system is likely to tip people toward disease.

The research team devised a technique for analyzing gene-sequencing data that explores whether variants cluster in a subset of cases in a non-random way. After finding support for their hypothesis in previously obtained data on 123 families with at least two schizophrenia-affected members, they decided to sequence genes connected through a biochemical chain reaction that has been linked to the disease in 48 inpatients. Known as the neuregulin signaling pathway, that chain reaction relays signals within the nervous system.

As they had predicted, the researchers found that some of the families had multiple neuregulin signaling-related variants while others had none, a distribution that was highly unlikely to result from chance. Moreover, the schizophrenia patients with neuregulin signaling variants experienced more hallucinations but less impairment than the other schizophrenia patients in the study.

"These results support the idea that there's no single genetic recipe for schizophrenia, but that a buildup of mutations in a pathway related to the disease -- like neuregulin signaling -- can be the culprit," Avramopoulos says. "The results are also evidence for the current theory that schizophrenia isn't a single disease at all, but a suite of related disorders." Those patients in the study who did not have neuregulin signaling-related variants likely carried variants in a different pathway instead, he notes.

While the results of the study were surprisingly clear-cut given the small number of families in the study, Avramopoulos cautions that larger studies are needed to confirm the results before drawing any firm conclusions. He also plans to study the exact roles of the schizophrenia-linked variants the team identified. Finally, the encouraging results mean it would be worthwhile to apply the new analytic method to other common diseases, such as diabetes and heart disease, which also appear to have complex genetic roots.

Other authors on the study were Alex Hatzimanolis, John A. McGrath, Ruihua Wang, Tong Li, Philip C. Wong, Gerald Nestadt, Paula Wolyniec, David Valle and Ann Pulver, all of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

The study was funded by the National Institute of Mental Health (grant numbers R01MH057314, R01MH068406, R01MH092515 and R01MH085018) and the Johns Hopkins Brain Science Institute.

A Russian rocket carrying a trio of astronauts is on its way to the International Space Station.

NASA astronaut Karen Nyberg, European Space Agency astronaut Luca Parmitano and Russian cosmonaut Fyodor Yurchikhin successfully launched aboard the Russian Soyuz TMA-09M spacecraft from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan toward the orbiting outpost today (May 28) at 4:31 p.m. EDT (2031 GMT). The local time was early Wednesday.

The three newest space station crewmembers are expected to arrive just six hours after launch, in the second ever one-day manned trip to the International Space Station. [See Photos of the Express Launch ]

"Soyuz blazing into the night sky over Kazakhstan," NASA spokesman Kelly Humphries said upon launch.

Yurchikhin, the commander of the Soyuz, chose a toy dog as the crew's mascot. The cosmonaut got the stuffed animal as a gift 30 years ago, and he brought it with him to space in 2010 as well. The Soyuz commander also brought toys given to him by his daughters into the capsule.

Speedy trip

The Soyuz crew is scheduled to arrive at the station's Rassvet module at 10:17 p.m. EDT (0217 May 29 GMT). You can watch live coverage of the docking on SPACE.com starting at 9:30 p.m. EDT (0130 May 29 GMT).

It usually takes about two days for a manned Soyuz spacecraft to reach the International Space Station, but this time, the astronauts will make only four orbits of the Earth before docking.

Although many unmanned cargo ships do these kinds of expedited docking procedures regularly, only one other Soyuz crew has flown to the space station using this method.?

NASA's Chris Cassidy and Russian cosmonauts Pavel Vinogradov and Alexander Misurkin ? the three astronauts currently living and working on the space station ? were the first crew to do the one-day launch and docking when they blasted off to the station in March.

These express trips to the space laboratory give the astronauts more time to adjust to life in orbit on the space station instead of inside a cramped capsule. Mission managers have said that it saves money as well: Personnel needed in Mission Control when the Soyuz is flying can go home earlier when the trips are shorter.

Veterans and rookies

Nyberg, Yurchikhin and Parmitano represent a mixed international crew of first time and veteran spaceflyers.

Yurchikhin has spent more than a year in orbit already, logging 371 days in space. Nyberg flew to space onboard the space shuttle Discovery in 2008, but this marks her first time living on the more complete space station.

"When we went up before, we brought up the Japanese laboratory and our main job was helping to build the International Space Station. This time we won't be building anymore," Nyberg told SPACE.com. "We're maintaining it and primarily doing scientific research."

This will be Parmitano's first flight to the International Space Station.

"Of course, looking out cupola [the space station's largest window], I just know it will be an incredible experience, it will create memories that will be with me forever," Parmitano said in a NASA pre-flight interview. "Certainly the thought of doing extravehicular activity and being outside is also something that really excites me, but in general, I'm really just looking forward to the full experience from launch to reentry."

The astronauts have a busy mission ahead of them once they join Cassidy, Vinogradov and Misurkin to complete the Expedition 36 crew. During the six months that Nyberg, Parmitano and Yurchikhin live onboard the station, the crew will perform five spacewalks as well as receive a handful of unmanned cargo ships at the station.

Yurchikhin and Misurkin will conduct three Russian spacewalks focused on maintenance, while Cassidy and Parmitano will venture outside of the space station twice in July.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? The Indiana Pacers didn't see this version of Udonis Haslem coming. There was no reason to.

Haslem, a veteran forward who had scored in single digits in six of his previous seven playoff games, finished with 17 points on 8-for-9 shooting to help the Miami Heat beat the Pacers 114-96 in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference finals on Sunday night.

The Heat took a 2-1 lead in the series and regained homecourt advantage with Game 4 set for Tuesday night in Indianapolis.

Haslem went a quiet 1-for-7 from the floor in the first two games of the series, but he looked for his shot early and often in Game 3. His mid-range jumpers constantly left 7-foot-2 center Roy Hibbert out of position. Hibbert had been playing slightly loose defense on Haslem and Chris Bosh to help protect the rim and the lane against LeBron James and Dwyane Wade.

Hibbert said Haslem's effectiveness forced him to change his approach.

"I think he was really the guy that pushed them, the catalyst for them," he said. "Just him hitting those shots really made us have to think on defense. Who do we guard? Do we guard the paint, or do we have to go out to the shooters out in the corner."

Pacers coach Frank Vogel was heavily criticized for taking Hibbert out of Game 1 before James' game-winning layup. Vogel said he made the move because he was worried Bosh would get open for an easy jumper. The Heat spent 48 minutes showing Pacers fans why Vogel's Game 1 decision might not have been such a bad idea.

"That's what Miami does, they space you out," he said. "They make it difficult to have a rim protector in the game at all times. They challenge you to keep a guy at the rim and still make them close out to an 18-foot jump shooter. We have to account for that."

While Haslem and Bosh pulled Hibbert and power forward David West away from the basket, James took over as the Heat's post presence, overpowering and dominating All-Star forward Paul George.

"I made a conscious effort to get down in the post tonight, to put pressure on their defense," James said. "The coaching staff wanted me to be down there tonight, and my teammates allowed me to do that."

James, bouncing back after two late turnovers cost Miami in Game 2, had 22 points, four rebounds and three assists. Hours after Wade learned he would only be tagged with a flagrant foul from Game 2 and not a suspension, he finished with 18 points, eight assists and four rebounds. Bosh added 15 points and three rebounds, and all five Miami starters reached double figures.

Miami outscored Indiana 56-32 in the paint, but perhaps that much should be expected from a team with this much scoring punch ? one that has won 23 of its last 24 games on the road.

The other stuff, not so much.

Miami committed a playoff franchise-low one turnover in the first half and finished with only five. James finished with none.

The Heat shot 54.5 percent against a Pacers team that finished the regular season with the NBA's best defensive field goal percentage and also made 24 of 28 free throws. They matched the highest scoring output in a quarter during this season's playoffs with 34, broke the franchise playoff record for points in a half (70) and fell one point short of tying the third-highest point total in a playoff game in franchise history.

But the biggest difference between the first two games and Sunday night's rout was James' work on the inside.

"It was something we wanted to get just to help settle us and get into a more aggressive attack," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said of the decision to post up the 6-foot-8 James. "We wanted to be a little more aggressive, a little more committed to getting into the paint and seeing what would happen. LeBron was very committed and focused not to settle."

Now it's the Pacers turn to adjust.

West led Indiana with 21 points and 10 rebounds, while Hibbert had 20 points and 17 boards. George finished with 13 points and eight assists, not nearly enough for the Pacers to remain perfect at home in the postseason.

Miami took advantage of a wild first quarter to build a 34-30 lead, then turned the game with James taking control in a 12-point second quarter. He scored half of the points in an 8-2 run that gave the Heat what was then their biggest lead of the series, 42-32.

A few minutes later, James did it again, making a 15-footer with 1.3 seconds left in the half to give Miami a 70-56 lead at the break ? and the franchise record.

Indiana opened the second half looking more like the team that had given Miami fits in Games 1 and 2. The Pacers hit back-to-back 3-pointers and got a three-point play from George Hill. When Lance Stephenson followed that with 1 of 2 free throws, the lead had been cut to 74-67.

It didn't last.

Miami countered with a 9-4 run, extended the lead to 91-76 after three and made it 99-78 early in the fourth. Indiana never challenged again ? the 18-point margin matching Indiana's worst home loss of the season ? even though James scored only four second-half points.

"If you're not perfect guarding them, they'll do what they did to us tonight," Vogel said. "Sometimes when you are perfect with your coverages, they still find a way to make baskets. But we didn't have a great defensive night."

MAKHACHKALA, Russia (AP) ? A female suicide bomber blew herself up in the southern Russian region of Dagestan on Saturday, injuring at least 18, including two children and five police officers, authorities said. The attacker was later identified as a widow of two Islamic radicals killed by security forces.

It was the first suicide bombing in Dagestan since the Boston Marathon attacks last month. The Tsarnaev brothers suspected of carrying out those blasts are ethnic Chechens who lived in this turbulent Caucasus province before moving to the U.S. Tamerlan Tsarnaev, the elder brother who was killed in a shootout with police days after the April 15 bombings, spent six months in Dagestan in 2012.

Dagestan remains an epicenter of violence in the confrontation between Islamic radicals and federal forces. Islamic extremists strive to create an independent Muslim state, or "emirate," in the Caucasus and parts of southern Russia with a sizable Muslim population.

In Saturday's attack, the bomber detonated an explosives-laden belt in the central square in the provincial capital, Makhachkala, Dagestan's police spokesman Vyacheslav Gasanov said.

The woman was identified as Madina Alieva, 25, who married an Islamist who was killed in 2009 and then wedded another Islamic radical who was gunned down last year, police spokeswoman Fatina Ubaidatova said.

Since 2000, at least two dozen women, most of them from the Caucasus, have carried out suicide bombings in Russian cities and aboard trains and planes. All were linked to an Islamic insurgency that spread throughout Dagestan and the predominantly Muslim Caucasus region after two separatist wars in neighboring Chechnya.

The bombers are often called "black widows" in Russia because many are the widows, or other relatives, of militants killed by security forces. Islamic militants are believed to convince "black widows" that a suicide bombing will reunite them with their dead relatives beyond the grave.

Police said two of the people injured in the attack were in critical condition. There were no details about the injured children.

This week, a double explosion in Makhachkala killed four civilians and left 44 injured, while three security officers and three suspected militants have been killed in other incidents. One of the devices was in a parked car and the other was placed in a trash bin.

Although Chechen separatists were battered almost a decade ago, Islamists continue to move through the region's mountains and forests with comparative ease despite security sweeps by federal forces and police under the control of local leaders loyal to the Kremlin.

Human rights groups say that abductions, torture and extrajudicial killings of young men suspected of militant links by Russian security forces have helped swell the rebels' ranks. Caucasus experts say that Islamists routinely extort money from government officials and businessmen and attack or kill those who refuse to pay.

For those who grew up in the surrounding areas, the Jersey Shore is a strip filled with decades of sweet summer memories. But many people across the country got their first up-close look at the boardwalk when it served as the backdrop for MTV's reality TV bash with the same name.

Last fall, Superstorm Sandy brought devastation to the famous stretch. Now the Shore is back in the spotlight again -- for a much better reason.

Friday morning the attraction officially reopened. To mark the occasion, the cast of "Jersey Shore" joined TODAY on the all-new boardwalk.

"We were here right after the storm," Vinny Guadagnino recalled. "We were doing a big relief effort with MTV. You know, we got to interview real-life people that were here during the storm, and we saw all the devastation. And I can't believe how much it's recovered since (we were) here a couple of months ago. It's amazing!"

It was a sentiment echoed by Vinny's former castmates.

"This is known to be a happy place," Paul "Pauly D" DelVecchio said. "Everybody's always happy, laughing, smiling, having a good time. We came after the storm (and) it was the exact opposite. It was dead -- silence. It was awful. So to see this being rebuilt and us being back? It makes me happy."

And why wouldn't it? The Shore is back to being the place to be.

"It's a summer place," said Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi, who was well known for the parties she had on boardwalk when "Jersey Shore" was still on the air. "You come with your family, your friends. It's just a good time."

Jennifer "JWoww" Farley, Ronnie Ortiz-Magro, Sam Giancola and Deena Cortese were also on hand to kick off the fun again. When asked which traditional Shore treats they were looking forward to the most, they just couldn't decide between the cheese balls and the fried Oreos. And if those seem like tame choices for the gang that had more than one brush with New Jersey's finest thanks to their past party days, well, Vinny explained why.

"The governor's here," he said with a glance off-screen toward Gov. Chris Christie. "We've got to behave."

"Jersey Shore" fans can see more from Vinny on his new MTV effort, aptly titled "The Show With Vinny," Thursdays at 10 p.m.

For 30 years, people have been getting rid of cockroaches by setting out sweet-tasting bait mixed with poison. But in the early 1990s, a formerly effective product stopped working. Later studies showed that these roaches were specifically turned off by the sugar glucose in the syrup and that the key is an altered behavior of certain nerves that signal the brain about foods.

If you're a cockroach whose ancestors have scurried across the planet essentially in modern form for the past 146 million years, it's a safe bet you've learned a thing or two about survival.

Now, researchers have uncovered one secret to that survival, especially in the face of human exterminators. It's all in the bugs' equivalent of taste buds. Over a remarkably short time, the genetics behind their taste buds have shifted in ways that signal "poison ahead," even when the poison is baited with a form of sugar known as glucose.

"We don't know if glucose actually tastes bitter" to roaches that have evolved to avoid the sugar, notes Coby Schal, an entomologist at North Carolina State University and a member of the team conducting the study. But the team did find that when these roaches tasted glucose, the action fired up tiny taste sensors that respond exclusively to bitterness. The bugs dropped what they were about to eat and beat feet to hunt for more palatable morsels.

A relative handful of entomologists has been studying roaches for years, largely with the aim of finding more-effective ways to eradicate the pests. The bugs find nourishment in everything from food scraps to dirty laundry. Roach infestations can represent a health threat as well, researchers say, by spreading diseases.

Beyond the yuck factor, which is enormous, the creatures also display some remarkable traits. Scientists note that they can live life as hermits or in extended families whose fathers and mothers are monogamous. They can breathe intermittently, holding their breath for up to seven minutes as a way to conserve body moisture that might otherwise escape as they exhale.

And they serve as ubiquitous models for studying a range of biological functions they share with other insects.

Indeed, the Human Genome Sequencing Center at Baylor University's Texas Medical Center in Houston currently is working to sequence the genome of the German cockroach to better understand what makes these pests tick.

For its part, the North Carolina State University team has focused on the taste mechanisms that cockroaches employ. The study is the first to show how an insect's cellular tools ? in this case, taste receptors ? control its ability to adapt to changes in its environment. In this case, the change is the arrival of baited poison.

In the mid-1980s, exterminators shifted from sprays to bug traps to deal with roaches. But within six or seven years, the roaches increasingly avoided the traps, despite the sugary come-hither coatings on the poison that the traps contained. The bugs had become glucose-averse.

Jules Silverman, another member of the team, found that the aversion was handed down from one generation to another, and so concluded that the emergence of glucose aversion stemmed from a genetic change in the population of bugs exhibiting the aversion.

The current study, led by Ayako Wada-Katsumata, also at North Carolina State, focused on the bugs' taste mechanism because of its relationship to eradication efforts. The team compared the taste-related behavior of the sugar-shunning roaches with roaches that still readily accepted glucose as sweet.

A roach's taste buds actually are tiny hairs on appendages near its mouth. Some hairs are sensitive to sweet, others to bitter. But even the hairs responsive to sweet have a mix of sensors on them ? one for sweet, one for bitter, and two that sense both tastes. The hairs most sensitive to sweet also can distinguish between glucose and another sweetener, fructose.

These "sweet" hairs and their mix of sensors were the focus of the study.

The team first analyzed the sweet-hair responses of roaches not averse to glucose, then turned their attention to the glucose-avoiders.

The team found that in the glucose-averse population, contact with glucose triggered a much more intense response from bitter sensors than it did from sweet sensors on the sugar-sensitive hairs. Indeed, the researchers say the response from the bitter sensors actually inhibited the response from the sweet sensors. Yet, when the team changed the sweetener from glucose to fructose, the glucose-averse bugs lapped it up.

The researchers are now trying to figure out whether the aversion trait evolved internally within the averse populations, whether the trait actually is an ancient, dormant tool for picking good food from bad reawakened by extermination efforts, or whether it came about through interbreeding with populations that were naturally glucose-averse.

As for exterminators, the team recommends not one attracting agent, not two, but a "smorgasbord" of attractants to baffle a bug that "learns" quickly and retains those lessons down the generations.
