Reviving Europe?s biodiversity with exotic animals

Scientists are bringing back long-lost species, such as water buffalo, to encourage the spread of native plants that fare poorly in Europe?s human-dominated landscape.

With its tiny houses nestled along the main road and its red-brick church, T?pchin ? just 25 miles outside of Berlin ? is a traditional-looking Brandenburg village. But heading east through the marshland that borders the village, a visitor encounters the unexpected: five huge Asian water buffaloes.

The species was native to Europe until 10,000 years ago, when hunting shrunk its range to the continent?s far southeast. So Germans know these beasts only from pictures of them in fields and rice paddies in Asia. ?Some people are really confused when they see the water buffaloes,? says Holger R?ssling, the man who set the animals free in T?pchin in the summer of 2011. But the black creatures with massive horns and an impressively muscular build appear to be very much at ease in their new home. And they are meant to stay.

R?ssling is a project manager with the Brandenburg Nature Conservation Fund, a government agency in the federal state surrounding Berlin. The group brought in the water buffaloes from a special breeder in France so they would graze threatened tracts of fens and remnant inland salt marshes, as German cows have long since lost their affinity for grazing in such wet or nutrient-poor environments.

The T?pchin project is an example of a growing conservation trend in Europe ? using large, exotic herbivores to enhance the diversity of native flora and fauna. Many people still believe that nature conservation is all about leaving native plants and animals alone, or restoring their habitats to a wild state. But in a world dominated by humans and rapid environmental change, things have become more complicated. The answer isn?t always to strive for a regionally ?pure? mix of native species. A growing number of conservationists now seek to employ exotic species for managing native biodiversity.

?Our landscape is dominated by human use, so we should allow ourselves to be creative and flexible with how to manage it for maintaining biodiversity,? says Reinhold Leinfelder, a bio-geologist at the Free University of Berlin and former director of Berlin?s Natural History Museum.

What is happening in Germany is complementary to so-called ?rewilding,? a global movement that aims to expand core wilderness areas, connect them via corridors that allow humans and animals to co-exist, and protect and reintroduce top predators. One initiative, Rewilding Europe, led by conservation groups such as WWF, aims by 2020 to rewild 1 million hectares (2.47 million acres) of land spread across 10 reserves, from Spain, to the Danube, to the Carpathian Mountains. By contrast, the projects in Germany aim to restore and create biologically enriched landscapes shaped by humans.

WANTED: Foster homes to give dogs new life - wsbt.com

MISHAWAKA ? A local animal rescue group is searching for some foster homes, thanks to a new law cracking down on puppy mills in Ohio.

Until the Ohio legislature passed the bill last week, puppy mill owners in the state were only required to give their dogs food, shelter and water. The dogs were allowed to be in a cage all of the time.

121 dogs at one Ohio puppy mill have been delivered to animal rescue groups across Indiana, including 13 that have ended up at Heartland Small Animal Rescue in Mishawaka.

The nonprofit rescue is looking for foster families and individuals who can provide stable temporary homes for these dogs.

These dogs may have never felt grass on their paws or even be familiar with an indoor living environment.

On Sunday, WSBT visited the Heartland Small Animal Rescue and found the 13 dogs from Ohio had matted hair, many had never received baths or been groomed. Some were seen to be visibly shaking.

?We are trying to work in advance to set up additional foster homes in our area,? said Heartland?s Linda Candler. ?The more foster homes we set up, the more dogs we can save from the cruel life dogs are forced to live and reproduce in puppy mills.?

Candler believes most of the small breed dogs, such as Yorkies, Poodles and Shi Tzus are highly profitable as puppies. The mothers and fathers being freed are believed to be around the ages of 2- to 5-years-old.

Heartland will provide medical care, crates, toys and food for the dogs. Fosters are being asked to provide the temporary home, love and patience.

You can fill out a foster application and help by going online to http://www.heartlandsmallanimalrescue.org/canine-application.html.

If you cannot foster but would like to donate to care for these dogs in dire need, you can also visit www.heartlandsmallanimalrescue.org.

Heartland Small Animal Rescue services St. Joseph County and the surrounding area by taking in homeless pets and adopting them out into loving homes. They also work closely with local shelters to reduce euthanasia rates by pulling animals and putting them in the Heartland program.

Candler expects to get more dogs from Ohio because of the state?s move to overhaul its puppy mill law.

Gas prices rise 6 cents; first time since October

    3 hrs.

The average price for a gallon of regular gasoline in the United States rose in the last three weeks for the first time since early October, as U.S. refineries passed on the cost of higher crude oil prices, according to a widely followed survey released on Sunday.?

Gasoline prices averaged $3.3247 per gallon on Jan. 6, up 6.68 cents from Dec. 21, said Trilby Lundberg, editor of the Lundberg Survey.?

Prices had declined for the prior 11 weeks, falling 57.96 cents since touching near $3.84 on Oct. 5.?

"This rise is a partial pass-through of higher crude oil prices that U.S. refiners are paying," Lundberg said, noting that more price increases may be coming.?

"U.S. refiners will need to attempt to complete the pass-through of their higher crude oil costs to marketers and retailers that they supply. That's the main reason we can expect a few more cents at the pump over the next several days, assuming there is no huge change in the price of crude," she said.?

Of the cities surveyed, Salt Lake City, Utah, drivers paid the least at $2.76 per gallon, and filling the gas tank cost the most on Long Island, in New York, at $3.75 per gallon. (Reporting By Karen Brettell; Editing by Maureen Bavdek)?

Valley bars suffer from ho-hum NFL playoffs

NFL fans at Starters Riverport in Bethlehem Saturday.

Sure the economy is limping along and part of that pesky fiscal cliff still looms, but Lehigh Valley pub owners have a more immediate financial worry: the Eagles, Steelers and Giants all missed the playoffs.

Snicker if you like, but those three teams haven't missed the playoffs together this century and Valley watering holes that rely on their rabid fans to keep the taps flowing are feeling the pain.

How bad is it? Dave Rank, owner of three sports bars, admitted that as it became clear late in the season that all three "home" teams could miss the postseason, he hit rock bottom.

"I'm a diehard Eagles fan, but for the first time in my life I was actually rooting for the Cowboys to make it. Maybe their fans could have saved us a little," said Rank, whose stable of pubs includes Starters Riverport, the Valley's largest restaurant. "This is killing us. We haven't faced this before."

Maybe Rank and his colleagues didn't realize it, but they've been spoiled when it comes to packing their restaurants in January. Just 60 miles from Philadelphia and 70 miles from New York, they sit about midway between two of the NFL's largest football markets. And though Pittsburgh is 280 miles away, the Valley is full of fans who drape themselves in black and gold on Sundays.

Not only are Valley bar owners fortunate to have three NFL home teams, but those teams have been so successful that they usually help pubs sell tons of wings and gallons of beer clean through January. The last time at least one of them didn't make the playoffs was after the 1999 season. And they've won four of the last seven Super Bowls ? two each for the Steelers and Giants. Sorry, Eagles fans, maybe next year.

There have been few studies that give a clear picture of the NFL's economic impact on communities . One commissioned by the NFL Players Association in 2011 estimated that each team created $160 million in economic activity for their region. Closer to the point, Philadelphia Sports Congress Executive Director Larry Needle last week said each Eagles playoffs game means $10 million in economic trickle-down for the region.

For Rank, a typical playoff weekend meant fans would arrive early for the Eagles game, drink and eat plenty, and keep the excitement going deep into the late game. And if he was lucky enough to get an Eagles-Steelers doubleheader, it was cash register gold.

But the luck has run out. This year the taps are at a trickle, the usually overworked waitresses at a stroll. In past years Rank said he could expect almost every seat of his 500-seat Riverport in Bethlehem to be filled for playoff weekends.

    And this year?

"Probably down 35 percent," Rank said. "I'm hoping they come out this week to see Peyton Manning or Tom Brady. We're reduced to rooting for individuals."

That'll likely amount to roughly $5,000 fewer sales per day at Riverport alone, he said.

The drop is steeper than that at Mezza Luna Sports Bar & Grill in Allentown, owner David Gubitosi said. Last week, for the wild card clash of the titans that was Cincinnati at Houston, at times his 27 screens were barely outnumbered by the patrons.

"Devastating. Take away the Eagles, Steelers and Giants and we're probably down 50 percent," said Gubitosi, who opened the 265-seat sports bar on Airport Road eight years ago. "This is going to be our worst playoffs since we've been around."

Same deal at Big Woody's Pizza and Sports Bar, where even take-out and delivery orders on weekends are down because fewer people are having house parties, said Matt Marcks, whose family runs five Big Woody's in Allentown, Bethlehem and Forks Township. The chain's best defense is the wing-eating contest it started six years ago during the playoffs, which often draws more than 100 spectators each day.

"The wings are our one saving grace," Marcks said. "Of course, more people are watching the wing eating than the games. It's a real downer when your teams aren't in."

It hurts this bad largely because the local bars are used to having it so good. The Valley benefits from three of the nation's top 10 most popular NFL teams, according to a monthly ESPN telephone poll of 1,500 NFL fans. The Giants and Steelers tie for the third biggest nationwide fan bases, and the Eagles are ninth.

For that reason, it's not just the pubs that are hurting. Every playoffs, the likes of Dick's Sporting Goods, Sports Authority and Modell's could count on stocking up on hats, jerseys and sweats of whatever "home" team was in the playoffs, stacking the merchandise on tables at the store entrance. No discounts needed.

"When one of them is in, people are happy, they're excited and they're crazy for merchandise ? doesn't even matter if there's a recession," said Lori Miller, assistant manager of the Modell's sporting goods at the Lehigh Valley Mall. "It's so much fun. This year it's boring. No fun."

And no sales. Managers at Dick's, Sports Authority and Modell's all said that for the first time in years, they didn't order additional merchandise for this playoffs season.

But it's not all bad, said Aaron Wilson, store manager of the Dick's Sporting Goods in Whitehall Township.

"We're a national company," Wilson said. "I'm sure our stores in Denver and Boston are selling lots of stuff."

US-OSCARS-ZERODARKTHIRTY:Hollywood watchers blame Washington for "Zero Dark Thirty" Oscar snub

    By Jill Serjeant

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Kathryn Bigelow's snub by Academy Awards voters stunned her cast and awards pundits on Thursday, with some pointing the finger at Washington politicians for the "Zero Dark Thirty" director's omission from the best director Oscar shortlist.

Bigelow was seen as the biggest casualty on Oscar nominations day after her controversial Osama bin Laden thriller won five nods, including best picture, but the director herself was cut out of the running for the industry's biggest honors.

"Kathryn Bigelow was robbed," tweeted Megan Ellison, one of the movie's producers, after the nominations were announced.

The movie about the decade-long U.S. hunt for bin Laden has come under fierce attack in Washington. A group of senators in December chided distributor Sony Pictures in a letter, calling the film "grossly inaccurate and misleading" for suggesting torture helped the United States capture bin Laden in May 2011.

The Senate Intelligence Committee has also launched a review of CIA dealings with Bigelow and screenwriter Mark Boal.

Hollywood watchers say the negative publicity affected the choices made by the Academy of Motion Pictures, whose 6,000 members are working professionals in the industry.

Los Angeles Times film critic Kenneth Turan blamed the snub for Bigelow on what he called Washington bullies.

"Chalk up this year's (Oscar) nominations as a victory for the bullying power of the United States Senate and an undeserved loss for 'Zero Dark Thirty' in general and director Kathryn Bigelow in particular," Turan wrote on Thursday.

Noting that the film has been "almost universally acknowledged as formidable," Turan added that "three members of the Senate, a deliberative body not previously known for its cinematic acumen, decided to place their feet on the neck of this particular film."

Bigelow, who won directing and best picture Oscars in 2010 for her Iraq war film "The Hurt Locker," was silent on Thursday. But Boal, who got a screenplay nod, said pointedly that "none of us would be so honored today without the genius and remarkable talent of Kathryn Bigelow, and to her we are forever grateful."

Bigelow and Boal have said repeatedly that their film shows a variety of intelligence methods that were used to find bin Laden, and have denied being leaked classified material.

Jessica Chastain, who plays a determined young CIA agent credited with tracking down the al Qaeda leader to a house in Pakistan, called her best actress nomination "bittersweet."

"I'm so excited, but I also feel the shock of Kathryn not being nominated," Chastain told entertainment industry website TheWrap.com.

Hollywood awards pundits noted that Bigelow was nominated just two days ago for a Directors Guild award.

Tom O'Neil of Goldderby.com told Reuters the controversy in Washington may have caused a backlash in Hollywood.

But Pete Hammond, awards columnist for website Deadline.com, said the snub for Bigelow could bring a sympathy vote for the movie itself at the February 24 Oscars ceremony.

"Despite the controversy, people may use the snub of Bigelow to make a bigger statement about artists having the right to make the movies they want to make without the interference of the government," Hammond told Reuters.

Speaking at the "Zero Dark Thirty" premiere in Washington on Tuesday, Bigelow said she found the criticism on Capitol Hill "surprising, but I also respect their opinions and I think that unfortunately the film has been mischaracterized."

"Argo" director Ben Affleck, Quentin Tarantino ("Django Unchained") and Tom Hooper ("Les Miserables") were also left off the director shortlist although their films were among the best picture nods.

The Importance of Hiring Bankruptcy Lawyers ? Georyl

In an ideal world, everybody will be able to repay his or her debts but a quick brush with reality shows that there are circumstances (both within and beyond one?s control) that will make one unable to repay outstanding debts on time. These are the times when the government, through the judicial system, steps in to provide persons and businesses a new start and give lenders a measure of debt repayment through the process called bankruptcy.

Recently, a friend of mine (to protect her identity, let?s call her Shannon) hired the services of one of the bankruptcy lawyers in New Orleans. She lost her job when the company she worked for downsized their operations in 2011 ? and she hasn?t found a stable job since then. Her sporadic income was not enough to pay her living expenses, more so her existing debts at that time. As the penalties and interest charges kept compounding, Shannon finally accepted the facts that there?s no way for her to survive the quicksands of debts anymore except by declaring bankruptcy.

For someone experiencing financial difficulties, it?s tempting for Shannon to just apply for bankruptcy on her own to avoid paying some attorney?s fees. It?s a good thing that she was able to talk to some people, most were former officemates who also lost their jobs during their company retrenching, whose DIY (do-it-yourself) bankruptcy filing ended up in disaster.

The whole bankruptcy proceedings may look easy on paper but sometimes, one would be better off hiring a bankruptcy lawyer than undergoing all those legal processes. When you apply for bankruptcy, you have to deal with the courts and those bankruptcy attorneys have the expertise when it comes to the legalities and judicial processes. You will have a peace of mind in knowing that you?ll be well represented in court saving yourself from headaches and keeping those creditors at bay (creditors cannot call you but should course all collection calls and efforts through your lawyer).

Now that her debts were discharged, Shannon is now adamant to make this fresh start work for her. She knows how one?s source of income could be lost in a blink so she?ll spend only what she can afford.

    I agree!!! Go girl!

(AP) ? The European Union's police coordination agency opened a new cybercrime unit Friday to combat online offenses from banking fraud to peddling images of child sex abuse.

But as the European Cybercrime Centre, or EC3, formally opened its doors at Europol's Hague headquarters, European Home Affairs Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom conceded it will be playing catch-up with organized crime gangs reveling in a "Golden Age" of cybercrime.

Online criminals, she said, "are ahead of us when it comes to imagination and cooperation."

Europol is fighting back with experts huddled around computer screens in blue-lit "labs," monitoring internet traffic and able to retrieve data users believe they have deleted from their cell phone or computer hard disks.

The agency says online payment card fraud generates an estimated ?1.5 billion ($2 billion) a year, while recent international investigations into pedophiles trafficking child abuse images on the Internet have led to hundreds of arrests worldwide.

Europol expert Valerio Papajorgji said the new center will chase criminals who attempt to conceal their activities in parts of the Internet and online networks not generally accessed by regular users or search engines ? known as the "deep web" and "darknet."

It also will track and tackle malicious software used to steal personal and banking information from people's computers and empty their online accounts.

Europol Director Rob Wainwright called the establishment of the center a milestone in Europe's fight against crime and efforts to deny criminals "the cyberspace and opportunity they are currently exploiting to harm governments, businesses and citizens."

The European center aims to cooperate with other such agencies around the world, and Wainwright signed a letter of intent on cooperation with John Morton, director of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, which has a long-established cybercrime unit known as C3.

Morton said cross-border teamwork is key to tackling cybercrime, which knows no borders.

"This level of international cooperation is not just an ideal or something to be wished for but rather a necessity," he said at the opening ceremony in The Hague.

"You literally cannot investigate and prosecute these cases any more ? the large-scale ones ? over the Internet without very strong international cooperation."

Design meets high tech: Gadgets with brains and beauty

    Featured

    1 day

    Wilson Rothman, CES 2013

More CES 2013?stories are below, but?if you want to follow all of the action,?here's your chance. Read more

    5 hrs.

The latest gadgets always have the newest components and specs, but there's no guarantee they'll be pleasant to look at. Yet every once in a while you come across something that's not only a cool device, but is downright handsome. Here are some we came across at CES.

That odd-looking grill above is actually a new external hard drive called the Blade Runner, designed by Philippe Starck for LaCie. From the front (if that is the front) it looks a bit like a radiator, but from the other angles you see that the drive is encased in a strangely?shaped blog embedded in the slats. It sounds weird, and it is, but it also looks great. And at $300 for 4?terabytes, it's expensive but well within reason for that kind of storage.

Another big name in design, Yves Behar, helped put together?the Scanadu Scout, a pocketable device that can be used to detect one's temperature, pulse, blood oxygenation and other vitals?in just a few seconds. We reported on it earlier in the show, and were struck by its elegance. Fitting so many basic diagnostics into such a tiny package is only possible because of the clever placement (and concealment) of its sensors.

These colorful blobs, shaped like a small loaf of French bread and perforated all over, are some of the Bluetooth speakers we dubbed CES 2013's "gadget spam." Even so, the bright but tasteful color selection and bold, chunky buttons really caught our eye.

Called the Urchin, from Boom, this water-resistant speaker can attach to your wall or bag in a number of ways, and comes in a number of other slightly shocking colors for $149.

With all the brightly colored silicone and plastic at the show, Lapka's understated design was a welcome break for the eyeballs. These tiny sensors plug into your iOS devices and report radiation, humidity, and other invisible information. But they do so while looking more like jewelry than lab equipment.

The app that collects the data was also well-designed ? even Lapka's modest booth at CES was pleasant and woody. You can pick up a set for $220, but be on the lookout for limited editions with other materials.

Lapka's devices were originally going to be made from ceramic, which is designer Joey Roth's medium of choice, at least for these unique and lovely speakers ? no plastic used at all. The speakers themselves came out a good while back, but the subwoofer is brand new. It's gorgeous, but hold onto your wallets: The full system will set you back $1,095.?

Joey wasn't exhibiting on the show floor, but was showing off the speakers privately. If you're set on audio, keep an eye on his site for some upcoming projects that may be more up your alley (and price range).

The Good Night Lamp is still just a Kickstarter project for now, but the creators' prototype was too cute to pass up. The big house can be used normally as a lamp?(you turn it on and off with the chimney), but whenever it's turned on, the small houses?do, too ? even if they're thousands of miles away. They're connected over the Internet, and you can have as many little lamps as you want.

Put the big lamp in your office or at home and let the kids or your spouse see when you're at work or have arrived at home. It's simple, elegant and the little felt "house coats" are adorable. The London-based Good Night Lamp Team is aiming to raise over half-million dollars on Kickstarter, so head over there if you want to help the effort along.

(AP) ? A high-speed commuter ferry that crashed into a lower Manhattan dock, injuring dozens of people, had recently undergone a major overhaul that gave it new engines and a new propulsion system, and officials are looking into whether they played any role in the morning rush hour accident.

The National Transportation Safety Board also will begin interviewing crew members of the catamaran Seastreak Wall Street on Thursday, a process NTSB board member Robert Sumwalt said would take all day.

The ferry had slowed following a routine trip across New York Bay and past the Statue of Liberty Wednesday morning when the impact took place, hurling scores of people to the deck or into the walls. Around 70 were hurt, 11 seriously.

The naval architecture firm that designed the reconfiguration, Incat Crowther, said in an August news release that the ferry's water-jet propulsion system had been replaced with a new system of propellers and rudders to save fuel costs and cut carbon dioxide pollution in half. James Barker, the chairman of the ferry's owner, Seastreak LLC, said the overhaul made it "the greenest ferry in America."

The hull was reworked, and the boat was made 15 metric tons lighter. At top speed, the ferry, built in 2003, travels at around 35 knots, or 40 mph.

Seastreak spokesman Bob Dorn, asked whether the work had hurt the ferry's maneuverability or caused pilots any problems, said it would be up to the National Transportation Safety Board to determine if the new equipment played any role.

Sumwalt said the NTSB was aware of the modification and would "certainly be looking at that, as well as everything else."

"Right now we want to collect all the information we can so that we can begin our analysis," Sumwalt added during an interview on Fox 5 News on Thursday morning.

He said the vessel did not have a data recorder and was not required to have one. But he said that wouldn't hinder the investigation, and they should be able to get information from the boat's electronic charting system and photographic evidence.

On Thursday, investigators also will be documenting the damage on the pier and engineers will begin to comb through the ferry's maintenance records.

Dee Wertz, who was on shore waiting for the ferry, saw the impact. She said that just moments before the ferry hit, she had been having a conversation with a ferry employee about how the boat's captains had been complaining lately about its maneuverability.

"He was telling me that none of these guys like this boat," she said. "It was coming in a little wobbly. It hit the right side of the boat on the dock hard, like a bomb."

About 330 passengers and crew members were aboard the ferry, which had arrived from Atlantic Highlands, a part of the Jersey Shore still struggling to recover from Superstorm Sandy. Passenger Frank McLaughlin, whose home was filled with 5 feet of water in the late October storm, said he was thrown forward and wrenched his knee.

"We come in and do this every day, and so it just kind of glides in," he said. "It came in hard, and it was just a huge impact as we hit."

Some passengers were bloodied when they banged into walls and toppled to the floor, he said.

"We were pulling into the dock. The boat hit the dock. We just tumbled on top of each other. I got thrown into everybody else. ... People were hysterical, crying," said Ellen Foran, of Neptune City, N.J.

New York City's transportation commissioner, Janette Sadik-Khan, said the ferry was coming in at 10 to 12 knots, or about 12- to 14 mph, when it struck one slip and then hit a second.

After the impact, the boat was able to dock normally. Wertz, who saw the crash from the dock, said passengers raced off once the ramp was down.

"I think people just wanted to get the heck off the boat as soon as they could," she said.

Police said the boat's crew passed alcohol breath tests given after the crash. Crew members also took drug tests, the results of which weren't immediately available.

Officials identified the captain as Jason Reimer, an experienced seaman. In a 2004 profile in Newsday, Reimer said he had joined Seastreak as a deckhand in 1997 and became a captain three years later at age 23. Barker called him "a great guy."

The NTSB said it had yet to interview the captain.

The Seastreak Wall Street has been in minor accidents before. Coast Guard records said the ferry hit a cluster of fender piles while docking in 2010, punching a small hole in the ship's skin. In 2009, it suffered another tear on the bow after another minor docking collision. No one was injured in either of those mishaps.

Such ferry accidents happen every few years in New York. In 2003, 11 people were killed when a Staten Island Ferry crashed into a pier on Staten Island after its pilot passed out at the wheel. Three people were badly hurt and about 40 were injured when the same ferry hit the same pier in 2010 because of a mechanical problem.

Wednesday's ferry accident happened just a few hours before a 200-foot-tall crane collapsed onto a building under construction near the East River waterfront in Queens, injuring seven people.

    96% Monsters, Inc. 3D

    All Critics (179) | Top Critics (40) | Fresh (183) | Rotten (8) | DVD (45)

This didn't need 3D to work. It long ago passed the kids-wear-out-the-DVD-rewatching-it test.

It may be harder nowadays to dazzle audiences with fancy visual effects, but Monsters, Inc. 3D proves that smart, imaginative storytelling still does the trick every time.

Most of the charm of "Monsters Inc." comes from its vocal cast.

If history is any guide, you and your family - whether young or old - will probably want to see "Monsters University" over and over.

The movie itself stands up well, even from an adult, two-dimensional perspective.

Its reassuring message is more relevant than ever.

There's really little reason to check out Monsters, Inc. 3D in... well, 3D, rather than going for a good old-fashioned 2D screening instead.

It does well, but not brilliantly: an amusing trifle from a studio whose best work still lay ahead of it.

Not quite a Pixar classic, but funny, witty and visually spectacular enough to be enjoyed again on the big screen.

Monsters, Inc. continues a positive 3D trend for the company, who appear to be selecting their upgraded titles wisely, choosing features that benefit from the additional depth.

Not even the opportunistic 3D-ification can squander the pure delight of the film's meticulously detailed world of ragtag creatures.

    [A] sparkling cartoon ...

John Lasseter and the Pixar crew know how to turn shared human feelings and experiences into strange and delightful animated features. "Monsters, Inc." is one of their most solid efforts.

    A typically engrossing Pixar effort...

Cute, kid-friendly monster movie; may scare sensitive kids.

Though "Monsters, Inc." relies more on spinning-plates plot than its Pixar peers, this romp retains the charm and heart of the animation juggernaut's forte - adding extra to ordinary hopes, in this case leaving great impressions on the kids we love.

A charming cartoon classic coming courtesy of a successful collaboration by the good folks at Disney and Pixar.

A charming cartoon classic coming courtesy of a successful collaboration by the good folks at Disney and Pixar.

A stunning release of one of Pixar's most sadly underappreciated works.

Monsters, Inc. is a celebration of unforgettable characters and a world unlike any other.
