Egyptian Islamists, others gather to show unity (Reuters)

CAIRO (Reuters) ? Thousands of Egyptians gathered in Cairo's Tahrir Square on Friday to show Islamists and others were united in wanting change, though divisions remain on how hard to press the military rulers about the pace and depth of reforms.

Muslim chants such as "There is no God but God" and "Islamiya, Islamiya" dominated. Some waved banners saying "Islamic Egypt." A senior Muslim Brotherhood official described the rally as a "Friday of unity of all political forces."

Some protesters chanted "People and army, hand in hand."

The Brotherhood and other Islamists had joined a big rally with other groups on July 8 demanding a deeper purge of officials who served under ousted President Hosni Mubarak and swifter corruption trials. But since then have stepped back.

Islamists said they wanted to give the army time to respond. Other groups, such as the April 6 movement, have kept up the pressure with some camping out in Tahrir.

"We are glad political forces are showing a united front at this critical juncture in the revolution," Mohamed Adel, spokesman for April 6 said ahead of the rally.

Some protesters accuse the Brotherhood, which was banned under Mubarak but now enjoys unprecedented freedoms, of making a pact with the army. The group dismisses the charge.

Protesters marched on the Defense Ministry and other military sites in Cairo and other cities last weekend. In the capital, demonstrators clashed with stone-throwing youths while soldiers forming a cordon did little to intervene.

The army rulers, in an unusually blunt statement, accused April 6 of trying to divide the people and the army, which has drawn fire for continuing to use military trials for civilians and failing to move more swiftly to try Mubarak and his allies.

In a show of support for April 6, Mohamed Beltagy, a member of the Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party, said: "The Brotherhood rejects discrediting and distorting any revolutionary force that chooses to rally peacefully."

April 6 has dismissed the army criticism and said it would not ease off the pressure.

"The latest attempts to marginalize us have not worked because the opposition knows if one group gets demonized then that eventually will harm all other groups keen on protecting the gains of the revolution," said Adel of the April 6.

One of the persistent protester demands has been for a swifter trial of Mubarak, who was ousted on February 11 after an 18-day uprising. His trial is now set for August 3 but protesters accuse the army of dragging its feet and being reluctant to hold their former commander-in-chief to account.

Mubarak has been in a hospital in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh since April when he was first questioned, and is now detained there. But he has not been transferred to a prison like his two sons and other officials due to illness.

A source close to Mubarak said his lawyer would tell the court in Cairo next week that he was too sick to attend the opening session.

Many Egyptians see Mubarak's illness as a ploy to avoid publicly humiliating the former president.

This is just one of many ways that credit card companies are increasing their profits, but it isn?t one that they?re willing to advertise. Failure to do so could raise the interest rate on your credit card substantially.

• Show how a service will make it possible to remain independent longer in his/her own home. Most of these professional caregiving services provide free consultation to assess the senior?s specific situation and make recommendations.
• If the senior continues to show signs of problems (e.g. burning pots of foods, missing doses of important medication or falling at home) use these events as a time to discuss your?safety concerns and suggest additional assistance options.
• If the senior is still resistant, but is a danger to himself/herself, speak to an elder law specialist about taking steps to become a Guardian to your family member so that you can make decisions for them.

Certainly some of these situations are more difficult than others. But?reaching out to others can make your senior?s life easier and lessen your stress.

Nintendo sees lowest profit in 27 years, slashes 3DS price (Reuters)

TOKYO (Reuters) ? Japan's Nintendo Co Ltd posted its first-ever quarterly operating loss, cut the price of its 3DS handheld game player and slashed its full-year profit forecast far below market expectations, hit by sluggish sales and a strong yen.

The weak result posted on Thursday confirmed investor fears that the video games maker is too focused on hardware when the market is shifting toward software, with games played on the Internet and on smartphones seen as key drivers of industry growth.

Weaker-than-expected sales of Nintendo's 3D-capable games device and doubts that it can replicate the success of its Wii home console have dampened enthusiasm for the company's stock, which has slumped about 30 percent in the past three months versus a 2 percent rise in the benchmark Nikkei average.

Nintendo kept its full-year sales forecast for the 3DS at 16 million units but said it would cut the device's suggested retail price in Japan by 40 percent to 15,000 yen ($192), which market watchers say is likely to drive the stock down further on Friday.

"It's not normal if you cut the price on a device you put out on the market in March within half a year by 10,000 yen. It was a big surprise," said Yasuo Sakuma, portfolio manager and executive officer at Bayview Asset Management.

It will also cut the price of the device by nearly one-third in the United States to $169.99.

"We feel the price change and several prominent software releases by the end of the year will definitely change the situation," President Satoru Iwata told reporters at a briefing in Osaka, referring to 3DS releases due out later this year from its hit Super Mario and Mario Kart franchises.

As part of its transition to new-generation hardware, Nintendo this year launched the 3D-capable handheld games player to fend off growing competition from other games companies, as well as makers of smartphones and tablets.

But a limited selection of new software releases for the games player led to poor sales.

SLUGGISH SALES

Nintendo booked an April-June operating loss of 37.7 billion yen, its first quarterly loss since it began reporting quarterly earnings in the 2003/04 financial year, against the market consensus estimate for a 7.1 billion yen profit in a poll of four analysts by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Increasing competition from a growing share of gamers using mobile devices like Apple Inc's iPhone and iPad, as well as gadgets based on Google Inc's Android operating system, has presented challenges for Nintendo, which began as a playing card company.

The loss contrasted with results at Sony Corp and other Japanese consumer electronics makers on Thursday that showed a faster than expected recovery from Japan's devastating March earthquake, even as they grappled with a weakening TV market and an uncertain outlook for the global economy.

A stronger-than-expected yen also weighed on profits for the Kyoto-based company, which from July expects an exchange rate of 80 yen to the dollar, versus its prior forecast of 83 yen, and 115 yen per euro, versus 120 yen previously.

Nintendo slashed its annual operating profit forecast to 35 billion yen, its lowest since 1985, from an initial forecast of 175 billion yen. The new estimate is far short of the previous consensus of 154.9 billion yen based on 24 analysts' forecasts.

"A terrible Q1 and worse guidance ... are likely to send the stock into a tailspin tomorrow," MF Global FXA Securities Ltd Trading Desk said in an e-mailed comment.

The 122-year old company has been looking to repeat past successes in the gaming market, when its Wii took the industry by storm five years ago by offering motion-based gaming that appealed to a broad audience rather than just core video game fans.

Last month, Nintendo unveiled its next-generation Wii console, which includes a touch screen controller and high-definition graphics support, but market watchers were underwhelmed with the device's lack of social networking capability.

Prior to the announcement, Nintendo's shares ended Thursday little changed at 14,000 yen, versus a 1.5 percent fall in the benchmark Nikkei.

Winehouse funeral takes place in London (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? The funeral of British singer Amy Winehouse was being held Tuesday after an autopsy failed to pinpoint the cause of her death.

Early indications show her music is set to dominate the British singles and albums charts this weekend, mirroring what happened in the weeks following the death of Michael Jackson.

The 27-year-old Winehouse, who had long battled drug and alcohol problems, was found dead in bed at her home in London on Saturday. Her funeral was being attended only by family and close friends, a spokesman said.

An inquest opened Monday and was adjourned until October, with police describing the death as unexplained. More tests are being carried out, with the results expected next month.

Her family was quoted in newspapers as saying they thought she died of a heart attack or seizure. Her boyfriend, Reg Traviss, denied rumors that she died in a drug-fueled haze.

"She had been full of life and so upbeat recently, exercising every day and doing yoga," he told the Sun. "This terrible thing that happened is like an accident."

Record industry body the Official Charts Company said on Tuesday that the singer's music was expected to dominate the British charts.

She is on course to have seven singles in the Top 40 and 14 in the Top 200, with the biggest selling track currently "Back To Black" followed by "Rehab," "Tears Dry On Their Own," "You Know I'm No Good" and "Valerie."

In the year following his death in June 2009 Jackson sold more records in Britain than any other artist.

As she fought drugs and alcohol, Winehouse slid from being a chirpy teenage singer to someone who could barely walk at her final concert performance in Belgrade, Serbia.

The Daily Telegraph newspaper reported Monday that material recorded before Winehouse's death could be released as a posthumous album. They cited sources who said Winehouse had recorded "a lot of material" and that her parents would have the final say on whether a new album was to be released.

Winehouse's spokesman told Reuters there was no news about the release of a third album. "I know there's material about, but no one's talked about it," he said.

William D. Delahunt: Patent Reform That Will Save Lives

The importance of the biotech and pharmaceutical industries to our economy is indisputable. Even more important than the dollars and cents, are the life-saving medicines these companies are developing. Continued investment in drug development depends on a strong and clear patent regime. The House of Representatives recently expressed its support for clarity in our patent laws, passing a reform bill that would clarify the procedure for filing certain patent term extension applications with the Patent and Trademark Office.

A provision of the Hatch-Waxman Act, passed in 1984, allows for the extension of a patent term to make up for marketing time lost during the often-lengthy process of obtaining FDA approval for a new drug or medical device. Given the enormous costs of developing new drugs, this type of patent term extension is critical to continued investment in drug research and development. During my 14 years on the House Judiciary Committee, I repeatedly heard that if drug developers lose a portion of the patent protection to which they are entitled, they will need to cut back on the amount of research they are able to conduct and, as a result, will bring fewer drugs to market.

For the Hatch-Waxman system to work, drug developers and investors must be able rely on these extensions. However, there have been inconsistent and confusing interpretations of this extension provision. Recently, a federal judge concluded that the Patent and Trademark Office and the FDA were interpreting the statute inconsistently, resulting in confusion regarding how to calculate the due date for these extensions. The court held that the Patent and Trademark Office had acted arbitrarily in rejecting an application for extension by a New Jersey pharmaceutical company -- The Medicines Company -- that makes an important anti-clotting medicine currently used to treat patients undergoing coronary angioplasty procedures.

The recently-passed House reform bill would eliminate this confusion by clarifying the way in which the extension due date should be calculated. The bill interprets the provision the same way it was interpreted by the federal judge in the recent case.

The Medicines Company invested hundreds of millions of dollars on the development of its synthetic anti-clotting drug. This drug has already been used by millions of patients undergoing coronary angioplasty procedures and has the potential to save countless more lives if important additional research is conducted. But this research, which could lead to the treatment of additional diseases, including heart attacks, strokes and peripheral artery disease, has been stalled due to uncertainty about whether the company will actually receive the patent term extension to which it is entitled under the Hatch-Waxman Act.

If passed, the reform bill would provide drug developers and investors with needed certainty, by simply making clear that the recent court decision correctly states the law for all applicants. Many patent holders could benefit from this clarification and thousands of lives could be saved. In just the last month, two other companies have asked the Patent and Trademark Office to apply the same interpretation of the extension due date calculation that the reform bill, if approved, would confirm.

As patent reform moves to the Senate for final passage, the Senate should keep in mind the importance of this provision and make sure it remains part of the final legislation.

Let?s take a breather from Barack Obama?s failure to lead on the debt crisis to his failed signature policy of ObamaCare.? Despite his promise that passage of the health-insurance overhaul bill would allow people to keep their current health insurance, a new report from the National Federation of Independent Business shows that one in eight small businesses have had to stop offering insurance to their employees.? The Daily Caller notes that the change has not been voluntary:

Among the most striking of NFIB?s findings was the number of employer health insurance plans that have been or will be eliminated since PPACA?s passage ? 14 percent, or one in eight. Eliminating employer health care plans ?is the first major consequence of?PPACA that small-business owners likely feel,? the report said.

?We are not aware of any data suggesting we?ve had turnover anywhere near this level in the past,? said?William J. Dennis, a senior research fellow at the National Federation for Independent Business.

The NFIB study also found 20 percent of small employers expect to significantly change their benefit packages the next time they renew their health?insurance?plans. Almost all of them expected to see diminished benefits, increased employee costs, or both.

The report makes clear that the change has mainly been imposed on small businesses.? Left on their own, they would have continued coverage, but in response to ObamaCare, insurers have curtailed the plans offered to smaller employers:

The considerable changes expected are in part prodded by plans that have effectively been eliminated by insurers.? One of the great ?promises? of PPACA supporters was that insured people would be able to keep their current health insurance plan. As a practical matter that has not been true for a substantial number of small employers and their employees.
