Cantor hopeful of deal, opposed to tax hike in 2013 (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? House of Representatives Republican leader Eric Cantor said on Monday he was hopeful that both sides could come together on a bipartisan deal to reduce the U.S. debt but said he still opposed any increase in taxes in 2013.

Cantor, who was speaking to reporters before a second straight day of meetings at the White House with Republican and Democratic congressional leaders and President Barack Obama, said he accepted a warning by the U.S. Treasury that markets would punish the United States if the debt ceiling were not raised by August 2.
