Loss of voice was 'awful' for Roger Ebert

By Courtney Hazlett

Roger Ebert's battle with thyroid and salivary gland cancer left him without his lower jaw, unable to speak or eat. TODAY's Natalie Morales interviewed Ebert from his Chicago home where through "Alex," the voice of Ebert's computer, the legendary film critic answered questions about his circumstances and his new memoir, "Life Itself."

Among the revelations: When Ebert was diagnosed with cancer, he had no idea that he might be unable to speak because of it. "There was never a time when anyone told me I'd never be able to speak again. Naturally, I felt awful, but I had to accept reality."

Ebert's interview is a poignant, honest one. Check it out and leave your thoughts in the comments below.
