An American university is threatening to block sales of Apple's iPhone and iPad over allegations of patent infringement.
Officials form Boston University have filed suit against Apple claiming that the company's iOS family of devices infringe on patent holdings of University professors relating to fabrication techniques used in the manufacture of the devices.
According to the University, Apple is violating patents held by professors which relate to the manufacture of what it describes as ?Highly Insulating Monocrystalline Gallium Nitride ThinFilms.? The University argues that Apple uses the films in its iPad, iPhone and MacBook Air products.
According to a copy of the suit posted by Apple news site Apple Insider, the University is seeking to claim a share of the profits Apple has made on its products as well as additional damages.
Apple has been no stranger to patent cases in recent years. The company remains locked in a number of high-profile legal battles with various Android handset vendors over allegations that the devices infringe on patents related to iOS.
The company has also found itself on the other end of patent claims, facing allegations of infringement on Android vendor patents with its tablet and handset designs.
Amidst the legal bickering amongst firms, many in the industry have pushed for patent reform.
Worried of the dangers to innovation posed by 'patent trolls' who base their business on licencing and litigating against companies for infringement claims, executives are now calling on lawmakers to pass laws which could limit patent litigation and protect firms from exceedingly vague claims of infringement.
