Reading on tablets easier for older eyes: study

People young and old prefer reading paper books to tablets and e-readers, but older individuals could find themselves reading faster and with less effort on a tablet. The news came from a small study released this week in PLOS ONE from researchers at the historic epicenter of the printed word ? Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany.

Among 360 readers ages 21 to 34, no difference in reading speed or brain effort was detected between reading via a book, a Kindle e-reader and an iPad. But big differences were recorded among 21 users ages 60 to 77 when they read the same text on paper instead of the devices. In fact, using an iPad improved speed and reduced effort compared to paper and e-readers. Researchers measured eye movements and brain activity from EEG readings to determine ease of reading.

Traditional e-readers were no help: Reading a short page of text on a Kindle took the older group about 28 seconds, the longest of the three. Switching to the printed book shaved 1.5 seconds off the time. But reading on an iPad took just 24 seconds, that's 2.5 seconds faster than reading on paper. While that may not represent a big timesaver when skimming news headlines, it could save hours reading "War and Peace."

The researchers concluded that the iPad's backlighting, which was adjusted to the brightest setting, made the difference. All tablets use backlighting, while e-readers use what's called an E Ink display that provides less contrast than a brighter tablet (although it allows people to read in bright sunlight).

But despite the physical findings, older adults and their younger counterparts said they got more pleasure reading from a paper book. The researchers said this was evidence of a cultural bias against digital books rather than a cognitive phenomenon.

It seems that for older individuals, at least, tradition trumps ease of use.

Study raises questions about dietary fats and heart disease guidance

Feb. 5, 2013 ? Dietary advice about fats and the risk of heart disease is called into question on bmj.com today as a clinical trial shows that replacing saturated animal fats with omega-6 polyunsaturated vegetable fats is linked to an increased risk of death among patients with heart disease.

The researchers say their findings could have important implications for worldwide dietary recommendations.

Advice to substitute vegetable oils rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) for animal fats rich in saturated fats to help reduce the risk of heart disease has been a cornerstone of dietary guidelines for the past half century. The most common dietary PUFA in Western diets is omega-6 linoleic acid (n-6 LA for short).

UK dietary recommendations are cautious about high intakes of omega 6 PUFAs, but some other health authorities, including the American Heart Association, have recently repeated advice to maintain, and even to increase, intake of omega 6 PUFAs. This has caused some controversy, because evidence that linoleic acid lowers the risk of cardiovascular disease is limited.

An in-depth analysis of the effects of linoleic acid on deaths from coronary heart disease and cardiovascular disease has not previously been possible because data from the Sydney Diet Heart Study -- a randomised controlled trial conducted from 1966 to 1973 -- was missing.

But now, a team of researchers from the US and Australia have recovered and analysed the original data from this trial, using modern statistical methods to compare death rates from all causes, cardiovascular, and coronary heart disease.

Their analysis involved 458 men aged 30-59 years who had recently had a coronary event, such as a heart attack or an episode of angina.

Participants were randomly divided into two groups. The intervention group was instructed to reduce saturated fats (from animal fats, common margarines and shortenings) to less than 10% of energy intake and to increase linoleic acid (from safflower oil and safflower oil polyunsaturated margarine) to 15% of energy intake. Safflower oil is a concentrated source of omega-6 linoleic acid and provides no omega-3 PUFAs.

The control group received no specific dietary advice. Both groups had regular assessments and completed food diaries for an average of 39 months. All non-dietary aspects of the study were designed to be equal in both groups.

The results show that the omega-6 linoleic acid group had a higher risk of death from all causes, as well as from cardiovascular disease and coronary heart disease, compared with the control group.

The authors then used the new data to update an earlier meta-analysis (a review of all the evidence). This also showed no evidence of benefit, and suggested a possible increased risk of cardiovascular disease, emphasizing the need to rethink mechanisms linking diet to heart disease.

The researchers conclude that recovery of these missing data "has filled a critical gap in the published literature archive" and that these findings "could have important implications for worldwide dietary advice to substitute omega-6 linoleic acid (or polyunsaturated fatty acids in general) for saturated fatty acids."

In an accompanying editorial, Professor Philip Calder from the University of Southampton says the new analysis of these old data "provides important information about the impact of high intakes of omega 6 PUFAs, in particular linoleic acid, on cardiovascular mortality at a time when there is considerable debate on this question."

Calder says the findings argue against the "saturated fat bad, omega 6 PUFA good" dogma and suggest that the American Heart Association guidelines on omega-6 PUFAs may be misguided. They also "underscore the need to properly align dietary advice and recommendations with the scientific evidence base."

To coincide with publication of this paper, the BMJ is pulling together examples of missing data it has uncovered, as part of its "open data" campaign. We are also asking researchers to tell us about any other documented examples of missing data, to build a picture of the full extent of the problem which is undermining evidence based medicine worldwide.

The current best estimate is that half of all the clinical trials that are conducted and completed are never published. Even when they are, the underlying data that the results are based on is rarely open to external analysis -- which is a cornerstone of proper scientific scrutiny. This means doctors cannot be certain that the drugs they are prescribing daily are properly evaluated for safety and efficacy.

Similar to a dog barking at a stranger at your door, birds alert one another when there is a threat in their neighborhood. On February 5th, as our recreation staff was finishing a meeting in Night Heron Park, we were alerted by a large group of crows creating a ruckus in the trees near the pond observation deck. We searched the nearby trees and shrub habitat, and determined the source of the crow noises- a small collared bobcat taking a snooze underneath a wax myrtle on the edge of the pond! We quietly watched her wake up from her slumber, stretch, yawn and slowly walk away. From her location and collar information, we determined her to be the 15lb Parkside 700 cat!

Each year the Kiawah Island Town Biologists partner with the Kiawah Conservancy to conduct Bobcat (Lynx rufus) research to determine the health of the Bobcat population on the Island. Bobcats are a native mammal species to Kiawah and are important predators on the white tailed deer fawns, helping to naturally keep the deer population under control.

Each winter, Biologists Jim Jordan and Aaron Given set up traps in different locations on the Island. The traps safely contain a rooster (not harmed in any way), which is used to lure the bobcat into the trap. Once in the trap, the biologists safely sedate the Bobcat and outfit it with a radio GPS collar that will track the Bobcat as it travels around the Island. These GPS points provide valuable information about the types of habitat and resources used by the Bobcats, and what areas of the island are utilized the most.

The 2013 Bobcat project began on January 28^th. To date 9 different bobcats have been trapped, six of which were fitted with GPS collars. Eight of the nine cats had been captured previously, including several originally tagged as kittens.

Let?s meet the 2013 cats! The bobcat number below reflects the collar number.

Bobcat 850- captured on January 29th on Captain Sam?s Spit at the western end of the island. This Bobcat is an adult male weighing 24lbs 4oz. He was previously captured in 2012 .

Bobcat 300- captured on January 29th near Willet Pond. She is an adult female who had been previously collared in 2012, at which time she was named ?McKenzie.?

Bobcat 700-an adult female captured on January 30th at Parkside Villas near Night Heron Park.

Bobcat 450- an adult female captured at Captain Sam?s Spit. She is the offspring of Bobcat # 220 from 2010!

Bobcat 750- captured on Flyway drive on February 1^st, cat 750 is an adult male who was originally collared on March 21, 2008 as a juvenile.

Bobcat 900 ? an adult female captured on Willet Island on February 2^nd. This bobcat was originally collared in 2008 and again in 2009.

Additionally, on January 30^th a 9-month-old Bobcat was captured in the Preserve. Finally on January 31^st, a juvenile male was captured on Flyway Drive . Both of these cats were too small to be collared and were released.

This GPS project will be ongoing throughout the year. Visit the town?s website to follow our 2013 cats. In addition to the 6 Bobcat GPS collars, 2 coyote collars will be deployed this year. This is a new addition to the study for 2013. Although rare and not a threat to humans, coyotes have been spotted on Kiawah in recent years. Since Coyotes are not native to Kiawah and compete with bobcats and foxes for food, it is important to start to understand their impact on Kiawah?s ecosystem.

Hollywood to the FAA: Let Us Use Drones

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Look, up in the sky. It's a bird. It's a plane. It's ...

If the Motion Picture Association of America has its way, it soon could be a camera-equipped pilotless drone shooting the overhead chase scenes for Hollywood's action thrillers.

The MPAA is pushing the Federal Aviation Administration to allow the use of what have been called "drones" - but in the movie business are far more likely the size of model planes and model helicopters than anything like what the U.S. is using to target terrorists.

Studios see the airborne vehicles as a way to get better long shots with fewer safety risks and at reduced cost. Currently, such drone use is legal in some foreign countries, but not in the U.S.

In fact, some of the opening scenes in "Skyfall" were shot in Turkey using a helicopter drone system. France has also approved use of the drones, and one was used last year for scenes in "The Smurfs 2."

"What we are looking for is line-of-sight things that can be utilized in innovative ways," MPAA spokesman Howard Gantman told TheWrap. "These could be used much more safely than going up a tree and much more cheaply than renting a helicopter," he said.

Under language in the FAA's reauthorization by congress, the agency must in the next 18 months develop rules for commercial use of what it calls "unmanned aircraft systems" of 55 pounds or less.

The language is intended to resolve a quirk in current FAA rules: Recreational use of model planes and model helicopters - including those carrying cameras - are currently allowed, but commercial use is banned.

Model airplanes can only be flown below 400 feet above ground level and away from airports and air traffic - but not by individuals or companies flying them for business purposes.

This means, for example, that student videos and films can use drone camera shots, but not commercial films; commercial use is limited to experimental research and development and flight trainings.

"A private company can obtain a special airworthiness certificate in the experimental category, but experimental certificate regulations preclude carrying people or property for compensation or hire," FAA spokesman Les Dorr told TheWrap.

While the MPAA acknowledges its interest and the MPAA's lobbying form filed with the U.S. Senate says specifically the organization is pushing on the issue of "unmanned aerial aircraft," so far such lobbying has been informal, and the MPAA has not had actual written communications with the FAA.

Dorr said the agency will seek written comments from potential users only after it announces a formal ruling.

Another reason for the MPAA's interest now is that the price for the drones has begun to drop.

Rental of a real helicopter runs about $1,700 an hour, for example, with a pilot another $1,900 a day - and crew is additional. One Indiegogo ad seeking development money for the company's "Alpha Dragonfly," says a drone that can be used for camera work will retail for from $119 to $249, depending on accessories.

The ad, which offered a Dragonfly for development supporters for $99, sought $110,000 in development money and raised more than $1.1 million.

The website of Flying-cam.com whose helicopter drone system was used in "Skyfall" and "The Smurfs 2" in Paris and movies in China and South Korea, also features pictures taken of its use in America for Disneyland's 50th anniversary, Alaska's Tourism Board and commercials or videos by Bridgestone and others.

All that said, the movie industry is only one among many looking at the technology.

"Many industries are realizing how unmanned aircraft could help their bottom lines," Melanie Hinton, senior communications manager for the Association of Unmanned Vehicle Systems International, a group pushing robotic devices, told TheWrap.

Indeed, it's expected that the TV and movie industry will be small players in the drones use. Companies that originally developed smaller drones for the military and wanting to now expand the drones use for civilian purposes have been pushing hardest for the FAA to act.

They hope FAA action will make it easier both for law-enforcement agencies and private companies to use the devices.

Steven Gitlin, VP-marketing for AeroVironment Inc., a company that makes several military drones it wants to market to civilian market. The company's 5-pound Qube drone is among those that come with video capability.

He notes that the high cost of helicopters means relatively few police departments can afford them. Those same departments might be candidates for drone purchases.

Then there is the civilian market.

"We have been pushing to use airborne vehicles for mapping and surveying," Gitlin said, adding the company also hopes to market the products both for search-and-rescue and policing missions and for uses in agriculture; monitoring of bridges and microwave transmitters; and security for public events including marathons and concerts.

In addition, oil and gas companies want unmanned aircraft to efficiently monitor oil rigs, pipelines and other infrastructure, said Hinton, and farmers "want to use unmanned aircraft to monitor the health of their crops, detect for drought conditions, or more efficiently distribute pesticides.

"And in addition to helping the private sector, unmanned aircraft have helped firefighters battle wildfires, police search for missing persons and researchers study everything from hurricanes to wildlife. The potential for unmanned aircraft to help save time, save money and even save lives is virtually limitless," she said.

Throughout February, advocates in Solano County will be providing outreach and education materials to schools and teen programs as part of Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month.?

"These materials include posters and pocket cards that provide information on safe and healthy relationships, how to recognize signs of an abusive relationship, and how to get help," according to a release from Solano County. "For more information about the various programs and services in Solano County to assist victims of domestic violence as well as to prevent incidents of domestic violence, go here."?

Here's more information from the County, which quotes a study that says "3 out 5 adults say a friend or family member has been a victim of domestic violence."

A new survey reveals public opinion and the reality of domestic violence in California are aligned ? ?it can affect people like me and people I know well.?

The survey also affirms the importance of programs to educate young people so they have the skills to support safe and healthy relationships as an effective solution to reduce domestic violence.

Blue Shield of California Foundation released a groundbreaking survey of Californians that reveals their attitudes about domestic violence. A strong majority believe domestic violence can happen to anyone ? women, men, young or old, any race and income level ? and that children exposed to such violence are at risk for severe emotional problems.? This is consistent with research studies on victims of domestic violence.

?This survey affirms that Californians understand that domestic violence is not somebody else?s problem, it affects all of us.?They understand the deep and lasting impact of domestic abuse on our families and communities,? said Carolyn Wold, the director of the Solano County Office of Family Violence Prevention. ?Solano County residents fundamentally believe that everyone has the right to live free of violence and this type of violence must be stopped and prevented.?

Annually law enforcement agencies in Solano County receive about 2,000 calls for assistance and to investigate domestic violence crimes.? In 2012, victim witness advocates from the Office of Family Violence Prevention provided services to more than 200 victims of domestic violence.? In addition, nearly 1,500 applications for restraining orders were received by the Solano Superior Court.

The poll, conducted by Tulchin Research for the Blue Shield of California Foundation, surveyed 900 adults statewide on their beliefs and attitudes about domestic violence during Domestic Violence Awareness Month (October). This is the first known survey to explore attitudes and opinions of all Californians related to domestic violence and potential solutions.

Highlights from the poll include the following:

• 70 percent of Californians see domestic violence as an issue that affects ?people like me? and ?people I know well.?
• 66 percent report having a friend or family member who has been a victim of domestic violence.
• An overwhelming majority (97 percent) believe that children exposed to domestic violence are more likely to have mental health and anger management problems.
• Respondents rated educating young people as the most effective solution for reducing domestic violence, followed by ensuring our communities have adequate funding for domestic violence shelters (93%) and raising public awareness (93%).
• In terms of when to introduce domestic violence education to young people, more than 80 percent support teaching middle and high school students about healthy relationships to raise awareness on relationship violence or dating abuse.

?I was surprised at the large number of Californians who have been personally affected by domestic violence. That appears to be driving their strong belief that domestic violence is something that could happen to anyone and their overwhelming opinion that programs for reducing domestic violence are effective,? said Ben Tulchin, President and Founder of Tulchin Research.

The great interest in prevention strategies and programs that educate students about healthy relationships also tracks closely with respondents? perception that children?s exposure to domestic violence causes serious emotional problems and violence later in life.
