Children who are very obese may already have risk factors associated with heart disease, experts have warned.

Scientists at the VU University Medical Centre in Amsterdam studied data on severely obese children, aged two to 18 years, between 2005 and 2007.

During that time, the majority of paediatricians in The Netherlands provided information on all new cases of severe childhood obesity, including their blood pressure, fasting blood glucose levels and blood fats.

Out of 307 severely obese children, 67 per cent had at least one risk factor for heart disease.

Fifty-six per cent had high blood pressure; 54 per cent had elevated low-density lipoprotein (LDL); 14 per cent had high fasting blood glucose; and almost one per cent already had type-2 diabetes.

Even among under-12s, 62 per cent already had at least one risk factor for heart disease.

Writing in the Archives of Disease in Childhood, the study authors warned: ?The prevalence of impaired fasting glucose in [these children] is worrying, considering the increasing prevalence worldwide of type-2 diabetes in children and adolescents.?

?Likewise, the high prevalence of hypertension and abnormal lipids may lead to cardiovascular disease in young adulthood.?

Doireann Maddock, senior cardiac nurse at the British Heart Foundation, said that the findings ?leave a bad taste in the mouth?.
