As the Sear?s commercial says, I hope you have an umbrella, because it?s raining cold hard facts here.

Earlier this month, the Nonprofit Quarterly had an article about the growing business of helping nonprofit organizations merge.

Merging a nonprofit is harder than merging a commercial enterprise. And the reason for this is what a call the ?competing bottom line of nonprofit organizations.? In a commercial venture, if the business fails to turn a profit, it doesn?t take long for changes to happen. And one of the potential solutions of a business to survive is to find another company to merge with another company.

In the nonprofit world, profit isn?t a key metric. Achieving the organization?s mission is the bottom line. Unfortunately, for many nonprofit organizations it?s really hard to empirically measure whether an organization is achieving its mission. We?ve all heard the ?if we change one life our organization is successful.? That may be true, but at what cost?

As I stated in my series on the Nonprofit Shake-out, one of the things we are going to see more and more of is nonprofit organizations merging for survival.

In this new series of blogs, I am going to post the questions a nonprofit organization should consider to help it discern whether merging with another nonprofit is a good idea.

One common truth in all mergers is that it is better to be the acquirer rather than the acquired. So there are different questions depending which side of the merger fence you happen to be on. My questions are going to focus on those discerning on whether they should be acquired.

Acquiring another nonprofit can be an attractive way to add donors. However, being acquired places the organization in a position of weakness. Let?s face it. The main attraction to merging two organizations is consolidating the expenses. That means jobs.

So the very first thing you have to ask yourself is this very difficult question: Is the survival of your organization?s mission more important than your job? Because if you are going to be acquired, it will likely mean you will find yourself being laid off.

If you answer no ? then you should avoid merging with another nonprofit. However, if you answer yes, then you should move onto the next question.

Hi,

First of all, you probably need to set up a database which would be able to handle your requirements. Something like wordpress would probably be able to do this for you, seeing as it is a "package" deal where everything is pretty much automatically set up.
From what you say, I think you would be best off setting up a forum. You can do this using free Forum software such as phpBB, which is PHP language based. The link for that is here:

Regarding linking it to Facebook and twitter, all you need to do is add a "Like" button somewhere on your website. If using wordpress, this tutorial should tell you all you need to know:

North Korea names new envoy for stalled nuke talks (AP)

BALI, Indonesia ? North Korea appointed a new top envoy to stalled disarmament talks Friday and was preparing for informal talks with South Korea on the sidelines of Asia's largest security forum, officials said.

The North ? which stands to get badly needed aid and other concessions if it returns to six-party talks aimed at ending its nuclear weapons program ? has indicated in recent months that it might be ready.

North Korean Foreign Minister Pak Ui-Chun told reporters veteran diplomat Ri Yong Ho had been named the country's top envoy to the six-way talks.

A senior U.S. official, speaking on condition he not be named, said the North also had agreed to hold working-level talks with the South on Friday.

It would be the "first big interaction" between the two sides in many months, he said, and could lead to increased open interaction between the two sides in the months to come.

Disarmament talks have been stalled since 2008, when North Korea walked out to protest international criticism of a prohibited long-range rocket launch. Tensions between the North and South have remained testy ever since.

But top diplomats from all six countries involved in the talks ? the United States, China, Russia, Japan and North and South Korea ? are attending the ASEAN Regional Forum raising hopes of a breakthrough.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said she and Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi would discuss their "mutual desire for peace and stability on the Korean peninsula" on Friday.

Yang agreed, saying this was the time to unite.

"Anything we can do together to promote a better atmosphere and good dialogue among the parties concerned and to restart the six-party talks would be in the best interests of peace, stability and security of the region," he said.

China hails Canada court decision to extradite fugitive (Reuters)

BEIJING (Reuters) ? China on Friday welcomed a Canadian court's decision to extradite the nation's most-wanted fugitive, but lawyers and rights activists have expressed doubt that he would have access to a fair trial back home.

The Federal Court cleared the way on Thursday for the extradition of Lai Changxing and he could be sent home as early as Saturday, dismissing concerns that he could be tortured or executed once he arrives back in China.

Lai's deportation would remove a thorn that has long plagued Sino-Canadian relations. Beijing has sought the deportation of Lai, accusing him of running a multibillion-dollar smuggling operation in the southeastern city of Xiamen in the 1990s in one of China's biggest political scandals in decades.

Lai fled to Canada with his family in 1999 and claimed refugee status, saying the allegations against him were politically motivated.

"The Chinese government's stance on Lai Changxing returning to China to stand trial is clear. We welcome the Canadian court's decision," the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The verdict was issued just after the visit of Canada's foreign minister, John Baird, to China, where he said "both the Canadian people and the Chinese people don't have a lot of time for white collar fraudsters.

China promised Canada in a diplomatic note that Lai would not be tortured or executed and that Canadian officials would have access to him.

"The fact that Canadian government officials appear willing to accept on face value the Chinese government's assurances that it will respect due legal process suggests a near-willful ignorance of the sharp deterioration in China's human rights environment since mid-February 2011," said Phelim Kine, a researcher for New York-based Human Rights Watch, in an email.

"(The) Canadian government's confidence in the Chinese legal system is curious given that since mid-February 2011, rule of law has been under intensified attack and the Chinese government has been routinely deploying thuggish, unlawful tactics to harass, silence and intimidate lawyers, artists and civil society activists."

The case exploded in the special economic zone of Xiamen in southeastern Fujian province in the mid-1990s when Jia Qinglin, now China's fourth-ranked official, was head of the province.

Beijing has accused Lai's business empire, the Yuanhua Group, of bribing officials to allow a massive smuggling ring in a scandal that implicated more than 200 senior figures, including Jia's wife at the time, Lin Youfang.

China put more than 300 suspects on trial and sentenced 14 to death, including provincial officials and a former vice minister of public security, in a case Beijing has used for a propaganda campaign against corruption.

Lai admitted in a 2009 interview with Toronto's Globe and Mail newspaper that he had avoided taxes by exploiting loopholes in the law, but he denies bribery charges. He said that had he not been in Canada he would have been executed.

Canada has no death penalty and will not usually extradite anyone to a state where capital punishment is practiced without assurances the suspect will not be executed.

Many Chinese legal experts and human rights activists said it was unlikely Lai could receive a fair trial in China.

"Unless the investigators, prosecutors and judges he will confront dramatically alter their customary practices, Lai will not receive a fair trial by international human rights standards or Canadian criminal justice standards," Jerome Cohen, an expert in Chinese law at New York University, told Reuters. Cohen was called by the Canadian government as an expert witness at Mr. Lai's refugee hearing several years ago.

"The real question is what detailed provisions has the PRC promised to make to assure Canada that there will be little risk of torture before Lai is convicted and during the undoubtedly long period of his prison sentence."

Reflecting the intensity of China's official position, state media in 2001 cited then-Premier Zhu Rongji as saying Lai "should die three times, and even so that wouldn't be enough."

John Kamm, executive director of the Dui Hua Foundation, a U.S.-based group that promotes prisoners' rights in China, said

in emailed comments: "Without a presumption of innocence -- indeed with the presumption of guilt -- how does one get a "fair trial?"

But he said Chinese assurances and the offer to allow Canadian diplomats access to Lai should offer some protection.

"If he were tortured or executed, the damage to Sino-Canadian relations would be massive, and would no doubt deter other countries from extraditing suspects who allegedly committed capital crimes back to China," he said.
