OSHA has cited Merlin Industries Inc. and Thermal Concepts Inc.?two Davie businesses owned by the same family and sharing the same address?for 17 safety violations, worth $59,100 in fines.
Merlin Industries is a sheet metal fabricating company, while Thermal Concepts installs commercial air conditioning equipment.
OSHA cited Merlin Industries for 11 serious violations, including failing to certify inspections of procedures designed to prevent accidental activation of dangerous equipment. Other citations were for inadequate guards for preventing workers from being caught by moving gears and chains, as well as several electrical hazards.
OSHA cited Thermal Concepts for two serious violations for failing to guard open-sided floor areas and for storing oxygen and acetylene cylinders too close to combustible materials.
Four violations were deemed ?other than serious.?
OSHA launched the investigation as part of its National Emphasis Program on Amputations.
