Jelly Bean updates coming for HTC's One XL and ... - Know Your Cell

Mobile carrier Telstra announced Thursday that two of its HTC smartphones are in preparation to receive Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Before you get too excited, though, note that we said ?preparation.? If you scoot over to Telstra's page, you'll see that Jelly Bean for the HTC One XL and HTC One S is currently in the development stage.

The status reads, ?HTC is preparing an update but is yet to confirm the date it will be submitted for Telstra testing.? Ugh. So, essentially this is just another big Android OS tease until we get some hard dates. And if we're going by Android's upgrade history, well, that could take a while.

Just look at how many Android owners are still running Gingerbread. Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich should currently be the most prevalent OS on Android handsets, and instead it's only managed to reach 10 percent of devices. With that in mind, we're taking this news with nothing more than a grain of salt. If these Jelly Bean upgrades can make it out in a more appropriate amount of time than all of its predecessors, Gingerbread's bite may finally start to feel expired.

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean is quickly shaping up to be the best version of Google's OS yet. It's certainly proven itself speedier than Ice Cream Sandwich and with an all-around smoother performance. New security improvements to Address Space Layout Randomization will help keep hackers at bay and malware should also become significantly less of an problem.

The search function with Jelly Bean has also received a bit of a makeover and offers a voice-activated search, kind of like Siri; you can ask full questions and Google will respond as accurately as possible. We had a chance to test out Android 4.1. on the Galaxy Nexus and Google Nexus 7, you can check out the full review here.
