The group brought in the water buffaloes from a special breeder in France so they would graze threatened tracts of fens and remnant inland salt marshes, as German cows have long since lost their affinity for grazing in such wet or nutrient-poor environments.
The T?pchin project is an example of a growing conservation trend in Europe ? using large, exotic herbivores to enhance the diversity of native flora and fauna. Many people still believe that nature conservation is all about leaving native plants and animals alone, or restoring their habitats to a wild state. But in a world dominated by humans and rapid environmental change, things have become more complicated. The answer isn?t always to strive for a regionally ?pure? mix of native species. A growing number of conservationists now seek to employ exotic species for managing native biodiversity.
?Our landscape is dominated by human use, so we should allow ourselves to be creative and flexible with how to manage it for maintaining biodiversity,? says Reinhold Leinfelder, a bio-geologist at the Free University of Berlin and former director of Berlin?s Natural History Museum.
What is happening in Germany is complementary to so-called ?rewilding,? a global movement that aims to expand core wilderness areas, connect them via corridors that allow humans and animals to co-exist, and protect and reintroduce top predators. One initiative, Rewilding Europe, led by conservation groups such as WWF, aims by 2020 to rewild 1 million hectares (2.47 million acres) of land spread across 10 reserves, from Spain, to the Danube, to the Carpathian Mountains. By contrast, the projects in Germany aim to restore and create biologically enriched landscapes shaped by humans.

WANTED: Foster homes to give dogs new life - wsbt.com
MISHAWAKA ? A local animal rescue group is searching for some foster homes, thanks to a new law cracking down on puppy mills in Ohio.
Until the Ohio legislature passed the bill last week, puppy mill owners in the state were only required to give their dogs food, shelter and water. The dogs were allowed to be in a cage all of the time.
121 dogs at one Ohio puppy mill have been delivered to animal rescue groups across Indiana, including 13 that have ended up at Heartland Small Animal Rescue in Mishawaka.
The nonprofit rescue is looking for foster families and individuals who can provide stable temporary homes for these dogs.
These dogs may have never felt grass on their paws or even be familiar with an indoor living environment.
On Sunday, WSBT visited the Heartland Small Animal Rescue and found the 13 dogs from Ohio had matted hair, many had never received baths or been groomed. Some were seen to be visibly shaking.
?We are trying to work in advance to set up additional foster homes in our area,? said Heartland?s Linda Candler. ?The more foster homes we set up, the more dogs we can save from the cruel life dogs are forced to live and reproduce in puppy mills.?
Candler believes most of the small breed dogs, such as Yorkies, Poodles and Shi Tzus are highly profitable as puppies. The mothers and fathers being freed are believed to be around the ages of 2- to 5-years-old.
Heartland will provide medical care, crates, toys and food for the dogs. Fosters are being asked to provide the temporary home, love and patience.

Gas prices rise 6 cents; first time since October

The average price for a gallon of regular gasoline in the United States rose in the last three weeks for the first time since early October, as U.S. refineries passed on the cost of higher crude oil prices, according to a widely followed survey released on Sunday.?
Gasoline prices averaged $3.3247 per gallon on Jan. 6, up 6.68 cents from Dec. 21, said Trilby Lundberg, editor of the Lundberg Survey.?
Prices had declined for the prior 11 weeks, falling 57.96 cents since touching near $3.84 on Oct. 5.?
"This rise is a partial pass-through of higher crude oil prices that U.S. refiners are paying," Lundberg said, noting that more price increases may be coming.?
"U.S. refiners will need to attempt to complete the pass-through of their higher crude oil costs to marketers and retailers that they supply. That's the main reason we can expect a few more cents at the pump over the next several days, assuming there is no huge change in the price of crude," she said.?
