Presidential campaign finance explorer

Presidential campaign finance explorer

Hey, I think it's election season, and you know what that means. It's time to dig into campaign finance data from the Federal Election Commission. The Washington Post gives you a view into the amount of money raised and spent in both camps, where it's coming from and where it's going. They start with the high-level aggregates, and as you scroll down, you get the time series, followed by the breakdowns for money raised.

The spending categories at the bottom are the most interesting bit. They cover advertising and mail, down to consulting and events. Payroll was a lot higher than I would've thought.

Web Design Tips That Can Improve Your Web Site | One Way Links ...

Do you want to create a great website? Do you know what it is that makes a great website? It?s web design. Without proper web design, your site may not do as well as you hope. Don?t worry though because this article can help. The information below can explain what goes into a great web design.

In order to host your own website, you must have the infrastructure and the money it requires. It could actually prove much more costly to you. You also need to know what you are doing. It is not easy as pie, and you must have the knowledge to host your own website.

Choose your web host carefully. Some hosts require you to link to them, while others may force you to install their pop-ups. You should also test their performance using one of the many tools available for free online, as you do not want to host with someone who is consistently slow or crashing.

Make sure that you include an ?About Us? page on your site as you are designing it. Do not just add blocks of text that are boring to read ? Jazz it up a bit! Provide background information, maybe include some photos of you as you work toward getting to the point where you are at today.

Try designing for all screen resolutions. A simple website can always encourage visitors to remain and read the content. If your site doesn?t look good for a specific resolution, the visitor may leave since they cannot view it. Designing a stretchier layout that fits any screen resolution lets you know that all visitors can enjoy the content.

Put some human personality in your site design. Find ways to incorporate things like company images, client testimonials, and media quotes. These touches give some personality to your site. As well, they can build up your brand?s expertise in the eyes of the visitor, which is very important in helping you build a loyal customer base.

Avoid useless scripts. Scripts like counters and date/time scripts don?t really serve any purpose, and since they are all JavaScript, can add a few kilobytes to the page?s file size. Getting rid of these elements also frees up space on the homepage. Replace those useless scripts with useful content that keeps users coming back.

Avoid adding too much content on your page that will make your site lag which can deter people from coming back to your site. You want people to have the feeling of wanting to come back to your site, not the other way around. So be sure to check your site from time to time to make sure what you add isn?t lagging it up.

Make sure you are always on the lookout for as much information as you can grasp your mind around when you?re getting into web design. There usually isn?t anything that you can learn that isn?t going to benefit you in web design, unless the information you learn isn?t true so be aware of this.

While hosting your own website might seem like a good idea, you should understand that it is not nearly as easy as it sounds. Avoid trying to host your own website unless you understand how much money it will cost and you know exactly what you are doing with regards to hosting.

Try using easy, maintainable and clear navigation. The placement of your navigation links on a website plays an important part in determining how long a visitor will remain on your site. The navigational structure must be neat, consistent, and easy to access for your users to have a better experience.

Do you still wish to create a great website? Do you know what it is that makes a great website now? Do you know more about web design now? Can you apply it properly to your future designs to be successful? You should be able to now, after reading this article.

Santorum, DeMint endorse Akin in Mo. senate race

(AP) ? Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin won two high-profile Republican endorsements Wednesday, a day after guaranteeing his candidacy would continue despite calls for him to quit because of comments about rape and pregnancy he since has apologized for.

Former GOP presidential candidate Rick Santorum and Sen. Jim DeMint, a tea party favorite, announced support for Akin's challenge to Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill. They called Akin a "principled conservative" ? the same phrase Akin uses to describe himself at campaign events.

"If Republicans are to win back the Senate and stop President Obama's liberal agenda, we must defeat Sen. Claire McCaskill in Missouri," Santorum and DeMint said in a joint statement. They added: "We support Todd Akin and hope freedom-loving Americans in Missouri and around the country will join us so we can save our country from fiscal collapse."

Santorum easily won Missouri's nonbinding Republican presidential primary in February.

Akin had faced pressure to quit the campaign after a TV interview aired Aug. 19 in which he said women's bodies have a natural defense against pregnancy in cases of what he called "legitimate rape."

Tuesday was the deadline for Missouri candidates to get a court order to withdraw from the Nov. 6 ballot. Akin let the deadline pass and instead embarked on a statewide bus tour.

Akin repeatedly has apologized for the rape comment, but lost support from top national Republicans, including presidential nominee Mitt Romney. The Republican National Committee, the campaign apparatus for GOP senators and Crossroads, a group affiliated with Republican strategist Karl Rove, all dropped their involvement in Missouri's Senate race ? eliminating millions of dollars of advertising that could have aided Akin.

In a fundraising email Wednesday, Akin said the Santorum and DeMint endorsements "are huge for our campaign and show that real conservative leaders are stepping up, because they know how important it is that we defeat Claire McCaskill and take back the Senate."

McCaskill's campaign called the endorsements a "predictable influx of 'support' from the extreme wing of the Republican Party" that doesn't change the fact that Romney and other prominent Republicans wanted him out of the race.

"You can tell these endorsements are 'enthusiastic' just by the way these Republicans waited until they were stuck with Todd Akin to finally support him," McCaskill spokesman Erik Dorey said sarcastically.

Akin, a six-term congressman from suburban St. Louis, has been trying to rebuild his campaign through online fundraising appeals and an anti-establishment message. He has been aided by former Republican presidential candidates Mike Huckabee and Newt Gingrich, the former House speaker. Gingrich headlined a fundraiser for Akin this week.

As the dropout deadline passed, McCaskill began running an ad in Missouri highlighting Akin's comment about rape, alongside previous comments he made that were critical of Social Security, Medicare, the federal minimum wage and federally financed student loans.

China surveillance ships enter waters near disputed islands

TOKYO (Reuters) - Two Chinese marine surveillance ships entered what Japan considers its territorial waters near disputed islands in the East China Sea on Monday, prompting an official protest from Tokyo amid rising tension between Asia's two biggest economies.

China's Xinhua news agency confirmed that two civilian surveillance ships were undertaking a "rights defense" patrol near the islands, citing the State Oceanic Administration, which controls the ships.

Japan's Foreign Ministry said it had lodged an official protest with the Chinese envoy to Japan against the move.

Sino-Japanese relations deteriorated sharply after Japan bought the islands, called Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China, sparking anti-Japan protests in cities across China.

"In recent days, Japan has constantly provoked incidents concerning the Diaoyu islands issue, gravely violating China's territorial sovereignty," China's Xinhua news agency said.

The ship patrols were intended to exercise China's "administrative jurisdiction" over the islands, it said.

"Following the relevant laws of the People's Republic of China, (the ships) again carried out a regular rights defense patrol in our territorial waters around the Diaoyu islands."

The Japanese Coast Guard ordered the Chinese ships to move out of the area, but received no response, an official said.

Besides the two marine surveillance ships, there were nine Chinese fishery patrol ships near the islands as of 7:00 a.m. (6 p.m. EDT on Sunday), but they were outside what Japan calls its territorial waters, the Coast Guard said.

Sino-Japanese ties have long been plagued by China's memories of Japan's military aggression in the 1930s and 1940s and present rivalry over regional influence and resources.

The islets are located near rich fishing grounds and potentially huge gas reserves.

The latest flare-up in tensions comes when both countries focus on domestic political pressures. Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda's government faces an election in months, adding pressure on him not to look weak on China.

China's Communist Party is preoccupied with a leadership turnover, with President Hu Jintao due to step down as party leader at a congress that could open as soon as next month.

Despite the long-running territorial disputes, their economic ties have grown closer over the years. China is Japan's largest trading partner. In 2011, their bilateral trade grew 14.3 percent in value to a record $345 billion.

Iran says new drone can cover much of region

(AP) ? A senior Iranian commander says the country's newly-produced missile-carrying drone has a range of 2,000 kilometers (1,250 miles), which puts much of the Middle East within operating distance of Iranian territory.

The Monday report by the semiofficial Fars agency quoted Gen. Amir Ali Hajizadeh, who is aerospace chief of the powerful Revolutionary Guards.

His description of the aircraft, which Iran first announced last week, is like that of the American RQ-170 Sentinel, one of which went down in Iranian territory last year. Iran said it was building a copy of the RQ-170 in April.

The Islamic Republic's defense industry frequently announces technological breakthroughs that are impossible to verify independently.

Gen. Hajizadeh said the drone has civilian and military uses.

Google: Maps not waiting in wings for iPhone 5

6 hrs.

Google has made no move to provide Google Maps for the iPhone 5 after Apple?dropped the application in favor of a home-grown but controversial alternative, Google's Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt said.

Apple launched its own mapping service earlier this month when it began providing the highly anticipated update to its mobile software platform iOS 6 and started selling the iPhone 5.

But users have complained that Apple's new map service, based on Dutch navigation equipment and digital map maker TomTom's data, contains glaring geographical errors and lacks features that made Google Maps so popular.

"We think it would have been better if they had kept ours. But what do I know?" Schmidt told a small group of reporters in Tokyo. "What were we going to do, force them not to change their mind? It's their call."

Schmidt said Google and Apple were in constant communication "at all kinds of levels." But he said any decision on whether Google Maps would be accepted as an application in the Apple App Store would have to be made by Apple.

"We have not done anything yet," he said.

Google and Apple were close partners with the original iPhone in 2007 and its inclusion of YouTube and Google Maps. But the ties between the two have been strained by the rise of Google's Android mobile operating system, now the world's leading platform for smartphones.

Schmidt said he hoped Google would remain Apple's search partner on the iPhone but said that question was up to Apple.

"I'm not doing any predictions. We want them to be our partner. We welcome that. I'm not going to speculate at all what they're going to do. They can answer that question as they see fit," he said.

Google provides Android free of charge and allows developers to add applications on an open basis, betting that by cultivating a bigger pool of users ??now at over 500 million globally ??it can make more money by providing search functions and selling advertising.

"Apple is the exception, and the Android system is the common model, which is why our market share is so much higher," Schmidt said, adding that success was often ignored by the media, which he said was "obsessed with Apple's marketing events and Apple's branding."

"That's great for Apple but the numbers are on our side," he said.

At one point, Schmidt, who was in Japan to announce the launch of Google's Nexus tablet here, used the device to show off a new function of Google Maps.

The feature allows users to shift their view of an area by moving the device in the air without touching the screen, similar to the effect of looking around.

"Take that Apple," he said, adding quickly, "That was a joke by the way."
